I wasn't too happy with the last tops I got from Shane....what a mistake!!!!!

I ordered 2 master grade tops, and when they got here I realized I should have ordered more...they were silky, even grained and ring like a bell...only orderd 2? what a mistake!

Has anyone experienced tiny, tiny pitch pockets in their Lutz? I bought a billet from Shane and have found that there are lots of very shallow pitch pockets scattered throughout the slice. Most of them are so shallow they sand out just fine.
I'm in NO WAY criticizing Shane or his product. I was just curious if this was a trait of Lutz in general.

Paul--

I've experienced the same thing. Frome the 16 tops that I've handled (i.e.--not a huge sample), it looks to be a characteristic. But I've found that Shane stands behind his product something like 150%.
If it doesn't work, he'll make it good... or gooder.

Thanks again, Shane!

It is time for me to show my stupidity. Are the pitch pockets the dark lines
of resin in grain????

Paul,

My experience is that all spruce species can be pitch pocket infested (I here it quite frequently from the Engelmann processors). There is some lore that your harvest season can be the culprit. It may be true but I am skepital. Sometimes the pockets are large enough and frequent enough to make the entire log sadly useless as tonewood. I have two logs (from the same tree) that I am just finishing off that had these small pitch pockets. You have a block from that tree. It has yielded some of the best top sets I have had to date. Some sets have also had an issue in the wrong spot that have made a wonderful set not usable for a guitar set, or at least a dread set so I just put those aside for my own use down the road.

So that was the long answer. In summary, they are not a characteristic unique to Lutz but are present in all spruces. But as Steve said, if you are not happy, I am not happy, PM or e-mail me and let's get happy !

Andy, these are small flecks that are very thin, a few thousandths of an inch typically.

I am glad that this wood continues work well for those using it.

Thanks again!

Shane

That's my experience with Shane as well. An absolute JOY to do business with.

I've just received a bundle yesterday and I'm totally delighted with the quality and the ringing sound that these tops produce. I also can hardly wait to use them.

Thank Shane; I’ll be order again soon.
