a while back I posted about how my website was down and a notice that my domain name was parked. Well it's been almost a month of sending emails and trying to call any number that I could find and still no responce. The company I listed through is DBmultimedia and the domain aparently is registered through a company called buyadomain.com Unfortunately neither is responding to me and I have no idea how to proceede from here or how to buy my domain name back.

I do keep my entire site on my computer so that isn't a problem it's getting the name back that I want to do. Looks like I can by it back from Buy a domain but that irks me since I already paid for it and have a receipt stateing so. I suspect I may have to get a varient of the name and go from there but that of course is a real pain as people know my site address.

Problem is getting access to the Domain Name. I paid for it but it is registered through Buy a Domain and DB multimedia They won't answer my emails or respond to me in any way. There is a local company now that does domain names and websites so maybe I'll go through them.

When did you pay for it, and for how long? I think this sort of thing can happen if you don't renew on time, companies like this are waiting to snatch them up. That may not be what's happened here, but I guess just check and sure that the domain name registration (not just the webhosting service) was paid for.

You might check out this site for info on how to dispute domain ownership and unauthorized transfers. The first thing it says is to try to resolve it with your original registrar, who may or may not be your web hosting service as well. They would be the ones who should have record of exactly when the transfer occurred and may be able to resolve it, if you can figure out how to get them to respond.

I read some online reviews of DB Multimedia (lots of negative reviews), but one thing I saw is that you have to submit a "trouble ticket" to get any kind of response from them.

Whether or not you get your domain back, I'd suggest transferring to or registering a new domain with a first tier registrar like godaddy.com and get your webhosting from a different company.

I made that switch recently and have been happy with it. When I initiated the domain transfer request online, Godaddy actually called me that evening to make sure I understood the transfer request, and were very helpful and friendly.

For a webhost I picked hostpc.com after reading favorable reviews. I had a minor issue when I was first setting up my site. I submitted a trouble ticket and it was taken care of within five minutes.

Hope that helps.

All of the companies, including godaddy, are just middle men. I would
google, "Web Services" and see if they were the ultimate registrar. They
likely are and should be able to get you situated.

Well I filed a complaint through Paypal and they did respond to Paypal. Their responce to them was "Domain name was lost due to a misiedentification of domain name atached to hosting account" No idea what this means. The domain name is registered through Buy a Domain .org and the registrar is wild west domains which is a sister company of godaddy I spoke with Wild West and they were helpful but informed me that at present the name is owned by buy a domain so they can't do anything about it. It looks like db multimedia resitered it through buy a domain and then messed up on that. I've paid for another year through dbmultimedia but can't access my account with them or get a responce. looks like I'll have to get a new domain name and then start again.

What is up with these posts... why make repeated posts with just a period?

Can you actually register a name to yourself rather than to a middle man and if so how. My problem is that when I orriginally registered my name through DB Multimedia and buy a domain org. they registered the mname to buy a domain org so it never was actually registered to Arvey Guitars.

If I understand correctly, DB Multimedia was your webhost as well as your registrar, it probably did used to be registered in your name. They mistakenly didn't renew your domain registration, so you/they lost it and buyadomain.org snapped it up legally as it was on the market unregistered, likely so they can sell the domain name to you at a premium price beyond the normal costs of registering a domain. DB Multimedia didn't have any direct contact or association with buyadomain.org.

Avoid middlemen by going to a registrar like godaddy or some other company that specializes in that... They have hosting services, too, but you don't need to use them to host your site. Then pick a separate web host (I've been real happy with hostpc.com). After that, your web host can't really use your domain name as leverage if you ever decide to switch web hosting services.

Wanted to add... I think James' comment about Godaddy being another middleman is technically correct but confuses the issue a bit.

There is a master list of domain names called the Registry. You can't go directly to the Registry as an individual and register your own domain name. You have to go through an accredited Registrar to get your domain name placed on the Registry. There's no avoiding the middle man there.

So, when you go to a company like Godaddy, they are the middleman between you and the Registry.

Now, Godaddy can resell their registrar services to anyone they want... Even I can become a reseller for Godaddy and hang out a shingle that says Letseatpaste Registrar Services.

Then I could get you to pay me to register your domain name with Letseatpaste Registrar Services. (I could even resell services of some other webhosting company and offer you a package deal with webhosting and domain registration). I turn around a register your domain name through Godaddy and skim a little off the top for myself. Godaddy then goes and registers your domain with the Registry.

Now if you have a technical problem, you have to come through me... Then I'd have to resolve the problem with GoDaddy, but you couldn't go directly to GoDaddy because you're not their customer, Letseatpaste Registrar Services is their customer.

Don't know if that helps or confuses more... I went through a lot of this recently trying to switch webhosts and my webhosting company couldn't get a transfer authorization code from the registrar whose services they were reselling.

I had some big dreams a year and a half ago and got myself a server at
the EV1 datacenter in Houston to start my own hosting company. Some
of my friends had 12,000ish clients so I was $ort of inspired. I'll tell you
what, I learned how to maintain the server, handle accounts,
everything...except domains. Talk about confusing       Jon's
explination is really good, and it sounds like I was wrong about GoDaddy.

The primary reason I dislike using GoDaddy for anything is the marketing
campain they had two or three years ago with strippers. That's my bias
towards them.

Yeah, I guess I hadn't paid attention to their past marketing or I might have gone somewhere else. I will say their service was fantastic, especially the fact that they post their phone number all over their site and it's not hard to talk to a real person.

That answers my questions, I'll register under a different name and start again. Thanks.
