Thanks you guys. It's been a bit of a trial as usual but the blood wood seems to be a pretty special wood. It has a certain resonance that comes through even when sanding. Every click of the chisel and tap with a tool sounds has a chamber like sound to it. Much different than the previous rosewood and hog that I worked with previously on my Martin kits. Don't know how it will sound with strings on it but it would make a wicked drum even in the state it's in now.

Next step is finishing the brace carving on the top, side braces, and sealing the box.

Yeah JJ, I'm hurrying as fastest as I can. The side braces are on tonight and the top will go on this weekend. Have to insure all the shapes stay and the dome survives but it won't be long.

It is looking great. I finished a Port Orford Cedar/Bloodwood guitar in
December and it turned out very good. The bloodwood is a very intense
wood (aesthetically speaking) so it isn't a choice everyone will like...but as
a tonewood, I think it is excellent. What stood out to me was the clarity
of the guitar, yet it still had a very rich and soulful voice. I think you will
be happy with the final guitar.

I've been dying for some kind of info on bloodwood and clarity is the one word I've heard describe the tone.

Hopefully the redwood top will add to and complement that warm and soulful tone you describe and retain its clarity.

I'm very interested in building with bloodwood so am anxiously awaiting your eval. The bindings I've used sure have a rich deep color under finish.

Probably a very minor point, but I really like the color match between the back/sides and the interior bracing/kerfing. It's going to be a treat just peering into the guitar.

Minor Steve but one of the motivations for the redwood brace choice - thought it would be quite cool - and different. A good clean up and a light coat of sanding lacquer or shellac to bring out the color of the redwood should finish it off.

Looking Great Larry, i love progress pics and i will follow your build very closely, i'm very curious about how it will look and sound, my prediction, it will be a super cannon!

David, that bloodwood guitar looks amazing both before and under finish, WOW!

Here's an interesting observation. I wet a small portion of the back briefly to show my wife the color possibility and the colr bleached away in that spot quite dramatically. I also dampened a couple of areas to clean up glue and the color came off in that area. Nothing really dramatic but a definite light area. Will have to seal quickly after final sanding. Any one else with a similar experience?

I'm wondering if this wood reacts the same way as purple heart does to sanding , purple heart turns greyish but if you wait a bit, it will get back to it's normal purple color, i think i would wait a bit after sanding Bloodwood the same to see if the pigmentation will get back to it's normal state., maybe do some testing on scrap and wait to see the results, you'll then know if you'll have to seal quickly or wait whatever amount of time, IMHO.

Hi Larry,
I have noticed that..in fact, it can happen with a number of different
woods that have very intense colors and tend to "bleed". I have found
that naptha is particularly effective at lightening the color - I'm guessing
it is just a good solvent for the wood pigments.

I suggest using mineral spirits when you want to wet the wood as I have
found it usually doesn't affect most woods. Regardless, a little bit of
sanding with 320 grit should bring the color right back - unless you went
hog wild with the solvent. Be careful when you are sealing the guitar to
not let the colors run onto your soundboard. I use System 3 epoxy and it
will transfer pigment if you are not careful.

Bloodwood really is a very nice tonewood and it is very affordable. I am
sure builders will start using it more and more as time goes by.
