What's the 'standard' tuner orientation for a slotted-head guitar? (I'm assuming this is the same for classical and steel-string?) Looking at the back side of the peghead do the knobs on the bass side turn clockwise or counterclockwise to tighten the string? (My guess would be counter-cw, as on a solid peghead.) Is the gearing on different brands of tuners arranged in the same way or are some brands 'reversed'? I'm a bit confused as not all pictures I see show the same tuner arrangement. ![]() ![]() Thanks John |

On the Waverlys that I've used I have always installed them such that the gears face south (toward the nut). This has worked fine for me. From all the pics I've seen this arrangement seems to be conventional. While I see the dilemma from your pics I can't explain the reason for the discrepancy. |

you will still find some old style (even though current production) mando machines which are reversed but the modern standard is as you have shown in your top photo, the tuning knob above the roller and turning in an anti-clockwise direction when viewed from back, that is the knob end. |

Thanks, everybody! Top photo is a modern guitar; lower is supposedly an older Martin. John |
