While I do have somewhat of an idea how to do it, does any one have a good way to inlay abalone purlings to the sides? Thanks |

Only one way I can think of ..use the filler strip, glue up the bindings and purfs as usual, pull the strip and then break the shell into the cavity - it will nee dot be in small pieces around the waist and cutaway. I examined a friends 82 Larrivee presentation which has the 45 style shell purfs, in the cutaway, the shell pieces where about 3/16 to 1/4 long in order to conform ot the curve. BTW .. have fun !!!! |

Peter, I asked the same thing awhile back and recieved several replies. I'm in the process of inlaying Abalam purfs right now. Tony is right on with the filler strip. I ended up getting Abalam instead. Its a lamanated shell and works better than I thought it would. I got it from Rescue Pearl. Hope this helps.

Dave, I have been doing abalone purflings for a while now....what I ment was the purflings on the sides....not top or back!

If you are looking to do a 45 style perfling with abalone on the sides, this is availabe at custom pearl inlay , that is where I get mine. The real stuff like martin uses is a bit thinner on the side than what is used on the top. 518-483-7685 Dave will take care of you. There is a teflon strip you lay in when binding. Once they are cured overnight the teflon is pulled and you drop in the pearl. That is how I do mine john hall blues creek guitars |
