I'm binding my first cedar topped guitar. On previous builds I've glued the binding on with superglue - after sealing the channel with shellac, of course. So, can I do the same with cedar, or do I need to use a different glue? The cedar seems much softer and absorbent and I just wanted to be sure I don't get any superglue wicking into the top. |

just did a koa and cedar and like all other binding, did it with ca. don't even seal the channels, but not bad idea if want,just never have had a problem with ca and binding with any wood |

Ditto as with Stan. Just did a sealed cedar top with ca and had no problems. |

Same thing, mahogany/cedar OM, sealed the channel with shellac and used bocote bindings with CA - no problems. |

I bound no 3 with Hot hide glue and it was a charm to use, did'n need to use shellac in the channels. |

The CA viscosity makes a difference here. The Stew-Mac thin and medium have worked well for me, but I have witnessed another brand wicking in vigorously - even into denser spruces like Red. It may not be visible until you apply a finish. Sealing with shellac should do the trick, but still worth a quick experiment or using a little caution. It's no fun to retop a guitar at this point in construction. Personally, I still prefer Titebond for all my binding. Wicking in CA is an established technique, but I've never warmed up to it. Steve |
