Put some Z-Poxy on my Redwood top and it came real dark. I'm thinkin Z-Poxy's ability to 'pop' the grain can also do some real darkening when it comes to redwood. Bottom line is I am not very happy with the tone and have entertained removing the finish but shudder to think of the consequences should that go wrong. Anyone taken such a drastic measure before? And then perhaps a waterborne sealer or shellac? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It will come off with scraping and sanding. It may, however have penetrated to some extent and permanently changed the tint. How thick is the top? |

How do you know what the tone is before you get finish and strings on it. I say march forward. I think it looks great. |

When you say "not happy with the tone" are you talking about the dark tone (color) of the wood or the tap tone you are hearing? Color is very subjective...Alot of people like a dark top, especially when it is Redwood such as a sinker Redwood...it is rarely lighter and can be very dark. Western Red Cedar can get very dark with some tops looking like chocolate. If the tone is the sound you are hearing understand that epoxy needs time to fully cure and the sound is dampened until it is cured. |

Sorry, the tone I'm talking about is the color tone and it seems that any finish I put on from here will accentuate the current color tone - not change it appreciably. Not sure how thick the top is - I think it started at .012 but I've thinned it a bit from surface prep. Not sure what I'll do at this point. |
Not sure how thick the top is - I think it started at .012
I'm guessing that you meant .120, right? ![]() I agree with Brock, it looks fine to me. |

The top 2 pics look a lot better than the final 3. If it is closer in tint to the first 2, I agree that it looks great. Keep the faith, Larry...this isn't a big deal IMO. |

I not only agree, I think it's gorgeous. "Dark" is EXACTLY what I would want - and I'm not saying that to make you feel better. That's a beautiful guitar. In fact, like Shawn mentioned, I bought a very special "chocolate" cedar top not long ago that I plan to use one day. Talk about dark...can't wait. Bill |

I agree Larry, March forward! I used Zpoxy on a Redwood top and also on the Coco back and sides and it popped the grain and darkened it just as your did. |

Keep the faith, Larry...this isn't a big deal IMO.
I agree JJ, but the tone is much closer to the final 3 and tough to get a true pic up on the web. Has sort of a dark almost dirty look to it. I'm assuming that will change as the finish coats go on but taking off the Z-Poxy seems like a drastic step and will need a LOT of thought before going down that road. |
