I'm looking for a few samples of guitar back woods, rosewood, mahogany, maple anything cheap that might be un-usable for building with ( split, cracked, damaged). I want to do some finish experimenting and could use any odd pieces that you might not have another use for. I know this sounds like a "cart before the horse" type of thing but before I start building and while I am still in my body shop ( which is being sold) I would like to spend a day trying some UV pore filling and clearing. After 28 years of repairing and painting cars, it's time to repair and or refinish something that I REALLY love, guitars! You could just start building and use your own cut-offs to practice on. When you join the back and then cut it close to shape, take the leftovers and practice your finish work on them. There will always be plenty of scrap to practice on when building. I say just go for it.

Joe...I have lots of cutoff wood that you can have. Also...if you're interested in pore filling, just use Oak...if you can smooth out Oak, you can smooth out anything.

Not to complicate things, but I know the Zootman can send you a WIDE variety of wood for "practice" sides - even properly thicknessed if you'd like. And they're relatively inexpensive, too.

For instance, I've bought about7-10 different pieces, all different woods, just to get some experience bending different types.

If you PM your address to me I can send a piece of figured Tasmanian blackwood and some Tiger Myrtle to work on. I would be interested to hear what finishes you find work best for these tonewoods.
