Ok, now I know it seems crazy to have an addiction to a cheese-flovoured snack cracker, but pretty much since I was a kid I've been a Cheez-it Freak. And I don't mean that I just like them a lot - I obsess over them.

My obsession isn't quite the normal obsession you would think about. I don't buy a box every other day, or even every week. The reason? Well, they just aren't always that great. Confused? Please allow me to explain...

I like my Cheez-It crackers to be cooked really well. I don't want them light colored. I want them to be just on the verge of being burnt. Give me that deep golden brown color, rather than that light orange-yellow color when they are undercooked, and add just the right amount of salt, and I'm a happy guy.
I don't always get them like that. Cheez-It is manufactured by Sunshine, which is now a division of Kellogs. All I can figure is that there process controls are pretty weak. How difficult is it to mix up a product, spit it out into it's shape on a sheet, and cook it to a desired amount? Apparently, it's darn difficult, because the product is all over the place.

Back to my obsession....

On that rare occasion when I find a great box of Cheez-It, I will run back to the store and search the shelves for more boxes with the same lot number on them. The lot number is easy to find - it's on the top lid. Just last week, I ran across a box that was perhaps the best box of Cheez-Its that I've had in 20 years. So I ran back to the store and bought 12 more boxes. I gave 2 boxes away to a couple co-workers who are also Cheez_it Freaks, and that left me with 10 more for myself.
Ok, I'm a little sick of them now for this week. But Next Week, I'll have more of those great crackers, done golden brown, with just a shade over over-cooking-to-almost-burnt on them. Life is good. At least with my crackers.

FYI, if you're also a Cheez-It Freak...
The lot number is AUG112007PA

Just thought you'd like to know.

Hi. My name is Nathan and I am a recovering Cheese-It freak.

The unfortunate thing about Cheese-Its, besides the obvious addictive nature, is they're not that good for you. There's a company called Back to Nature that sells a Cheese-It like product. It's better for you, but they always taste like a Cheese-It that's a little stale. I have , only on occasion, gotten a box of the Back to Nature Cheesy Bits or whatever they're called that are perfectly browned.

Good hunting for your Cheese-It lot numbers Don.

Now, I need to go call my sponsor.

Don you are hillarious, sorry if I'm making light of your addiction though, maybe this isn't ment to be funny, but I'm ROFLMAO

Never tried a Cheez-it but I'll make a note to get a box next time I'm down south.

Don, this prove that great minds think alike. Or maybe it's warped minds...

I love Cheez-its and I particularly love it when I open a box of what Nabisco would probably call the overcooked ones. These are usually my afternoon snack while I am watching re-runs of The Xfiles on SciFi.

Great thread!

Rod, In my typical off-beat way, this thread was an attempt at humour, so you got the point!
I really get a kick out of my own obsession with the stupid crackers.
I'm actually as obsessed with ice cream as I am with Cheez-It crackers. I don't go looking for lot numbers with that, but I am extremely particular about what I buy.

Sometime I'll post a copy of a newspaper article I wrote about ice cream. You'll get a kick out of it.

Geez, I can't say I've ever thought of myself as being "down south", but I guess that my friends in Canada can reasonably make that claim. Eh?

Cheeze Whiz... I had that once, but I eventually recovered.

Try this: spread out a layer of those little crackers on a baking sheet in your toaster oven. Then toast'em. You may be surprized at the result.

Ah come on Dennis, I've got to use my bending blanket for something other than burning wood.

Don W we have way to much in common. I also could never resist that one almost burnt Frito clump in the bottom of the bag. The hardest part of the addiction was convincing SWMBO that all cheese crackers are not CHEEZ_IT . However, I'm happy to say that I've moved past my burnt umber addiction to Cheez-It and Frito. However, watch your hands if you open a box of white cheese Cheeze It's...yummm Cheeeeze.

Don't you just know that Lance and Brock are sure happy they made an off topic area.

OH man! White Cheese Cheese-Its! Yeah, you start those when the addiction gets worse. It's a slippery slope. REgular Cheese-Its then to White CHeese Cheese-Its.

What is a Cheese-It?

Nathan,

Far better than White Cheez-It's is Smartfood. If they don't have it down in 'Bama, it's a Frito-Lay product which is popcorn with white cheese powder on it. It's far more addictive that the White Cheddar Cheez-It.
Smartfood was originally a product mad in Massachusetts, but was bought by Frito-Lay a number of years ago, and has since become an addiction in many parts of the country.

Don, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Ice Cream. There are several local dairy's around here and we go about once every 3-4 weeks for a cone.

My wife has recently discovered Cols Stone Creamery and says it's simply amazing ice cream. I'll have to try that too when next down south

There's a Cold Stone Creamery in the same shopping plaza as my local Woodcraft. Pretty good ice cream...but it's not Haagen Dazs...

Dangerous shopping plaza. Very dangerous indeed!

Thanks Don, we don't get those here - at least by that name. I might have a look in the supermarket on the way home, if they're that good I want some

Looks like they'd go well with a bit of real cheese and vegemite. Vegemite and cheese on toast is awesome, but sometimes you just have to have a bit of crunch. Now I'm hungry for some...

Cracker of choice, butter, vegemite and cheese on top. MMmmmm!
