A customer brought this instrument to me and wondered if I could identify it and tell them how it is tuned. I have seen these things before but I cannot remember how it is tuned. Any help would be appreciated. Go here for pictures. Thanks |

It is a Laud...a larger version of the Bandurria. The pairs of strings are tuned in 5ths (A, E, B, F#, C#, G#) starting with the lowest note being A. Much like a mandola is often called a octave mandolin, a Laud is like a octave bandurria. In Spain groups of instruments would play together with the bandurria and Laud strumming chords while guitars would take the lead. Just as the guitar evolved from the Vihuela de Mano, it is thought by some that the Laud evolved from the pandora (sometimes called bandora). |
