hey guys, i was wondering if jim olson is generally attributed with the design of the SJ. are the OLF SJ plans the same as the guitar jim builds? how does the volume of an SJ compare to say a dread? would you recomend this as a first build? this is a wonderful forum and i appreciate all of you out there answering my questions.

No, I think it's a Guild design. Not sure, 100%

are the OLF SJ plans the same as the guitar jim builds?

No these plans are based on Lances guitar but drawn by Michael Payne of Odessa Texas

how does the volume of an SJ compare to say a dread?

The Olson SJ is less boomy than a dred, more focused and can be a great sounding guitar all around, ask Phil Keaggy or James Taylor

would you recomend this as a first build?

Sure

this is a wonderful forum and i appreciate all of you out there answering my questions.

agree, agree

My understanding is that the OLF SJ design is
based on, but slightly different from,
the Gibson J-185.

Heath, This is His web site. He is a great builder, draftsman of great plans and jigs and is a very valued member of the OLF (who we wish a speedy recovery and come back soooooooon Michael)

Heath, I think Jim Olson popularized the shape of the SJ to some degree, and at least in my mind, when I hear the term "SJ" I think of Olson's SJ - to me they are synonymous. My SJ is virtually the same shape as his, because I happen to like it a ton. The OLF Sj is more Gibson-ish I think.

I'm not totally sure of the OLF size, I think 15-1/2" lower bout, the Olson is 15" lower bout.

That's the start anyway
