Where are you guys getting your hide glue? I know I can get it from the usual suspects (LMI & Stewmac) but I'm looking for the best price. Yeah, I'm a tightwad.

Bruce I have 193 Gram high clarity hide glue, but with shipping it may not be very much cheaper. But just another option for you. My glue is $9.45/pound. Shane |

What is interesting is that all hide glue comes from the same place. I guess there is only one manufacture making it. but to answer your question I got mine from Mark Kett and Woodcraft. |

Tools for Working Wood for me, too. Lowest price I've found anywhere. Be aware that they have two varieties of 192 gram. Get the high clarity. |

Thanks guys. I was able to get twice as much glue for about the same amount of cash I would have spent with the big guys.
Michael - Liberon has some good prices on shellac also. I bookedmarked it for future reference. |

The only hide glue factory in North America is Miilgan & Higgins: http://www.milligan1868.com/ They're happy to sell hide glue in fifty pound sacks - and the price is quite low. Get a big bag and never worry about where to find the stuff again. Tell Jay Utzig I sent ya. . . |

[/QUOTE] There is only one US manufacturer, but I believe there may still be some companies that sell some really foul imported stuff. I bought a can of Behlen's (if I'm remembering correctly) pearl hide glue many years ago and the stuff was absolutely rank. Most of what's sold certainly is Milligan Higgins, especially the high clarity granulated stuff, but beware of some rotten import pearls, especially if the gram strength is not listed. |

Roy, good questions. I've got mine in its original bag, and then I sealed that in a zip-lock bag with the air squeezed out. I'm wondering about shelf-life, too. |

From what I have read other places, as long as you store it dry and dark it has unlimited shelf life. |

I didn't realize that there are differnet gram grades :) which ones are you guys using for guitars? 192, 251 or 315 grams? |

Micro--192 gram strength, high clarity. It's a compromise between strength and working time (which is still plenty short). |

FYI, the higher gram weight HG, 251 and 315, are handy to use for classical builders who attach the top to rims with individual tetellones instead of continuos kerfling strips. The short open time is an advantage when glueing all those individual kerfs in place. Only need to hold the kerf for a few seconds and it grabs, then move on to the next one. The job goes much quicker. Also, handy to use for glueing on side braces to rims, and not really necessary to clamp, just hold in place for a few seconds with a fingertip until the HG grabs, then go back about 5-10 minutes later and clean up the squeezeout with a stick or soda straw CrowDuck |
