There was a request in the myrtle thread of a little update of what i'm working on at the moment, so here it is!
This guitar is the one that will hopefully get me my HND (higher national diploma) in musical instrument technology.
I went a little wild on this one - it's going to be a fanned fret 7 string, euro walnut B+S, euro spruce top, multi-lam neck and other such fripperies.
I'll post the pictures I've taken so far, with a small description of each.

First, the back and sides

Now the neck blank. I can tell you glue up was tricky, and messy! Because of the fanned frets, the nut is at an angle. When I come to thickness the headstock I will do so with a twist, moving the break angle and keeping everything neat

Sides bent (on a hot pipe, though I'm planning to build a side bender soon) Since the photo was taken I've put the blocks in and added the linings.

This is the rosette in it's current state - because of all the weird angles on the instrument I've had to do something strange here too - so spiral it was! The inlayed section is Brazilian rose, as will be the bindings and fretmarkers. The MDF is a mock-up fretboard end to cover what's not to be seen ;)

I've also nearly finished bracing the back. It's a self designed X. Hope it works!

Andrew,

It's looking good so far. I like guitars that are different. I'd be interested to know how you cut the spiral for the rosette.

Keep posting the pics

Well the inside cut's done in the my normal way with a compass cutter on the laminate trimmer.
The outside was done using a template with a collar and cutter. I used the same template with different sized collar/cutter to cut the piece to fit in the route in the soundboard...

Looking forward to see how this one looks finished!

Andrew,

I was the one who requested more pictures, and I'm glad I asked! Very creative, innovative work, and it even looks good, too! Start planning your diploma party now, my friend (and take pictures! ).

Hi Jammy,

You bring some interesting concepts to the table. Well done and here's to your HND!

Nice job. I love different too. The rosette is really a great refreshing idea. Keep it up and be sure to let us see the finished product.

Back's braced and everything's shaped up. Needs a little more clean up then it'll be ready to go on.

I'm pretty happy with the pattern, it feels like everything's well supported, and it looks pretty cool

It does, indeed! Whoever ends up with this guitar is going to smile everytime he looks through the soundhole. Nice work!

That is far out!
I really like the way that is going,
If this guitar is for your HND (higher national diploma) in musical instrument technology
then mabye you can take some of the comments from some of the more accomplished luthiers and designers here at the OLF {and elsewhere} as the construction process progresses, and incorporate them in to your project what beter feedback can you get from some of the members here!?
Cheers
