Ran across a deal on a floor model Delta 1.5 HP single stage dust collector. Just wondered what you seasoned woodshop pros advise? Will this handle a beginner shop with the avarage tools? (thickness sander, jointer)

That will just suffice for what you mentioned, as long as the runs are short and direct. You'll probably lose effectiveness if it's hooked up with overhead runs, multiple connections and blast gates.

Also, it would pay you back in health to invest in a 1-micron or less cartridge conversion, such as this one.

I agree. Small dust collectors can do the trick if you keep them close. It should not be an issue rolling them around the shop.

Joe, I have a 1 HP Delta in my small shop and it works very well. I run it on my bandsaw, drill press, thickness sander, router table and sanding station. I have two connections with flex hose and gates that I move where I want them.

I also have a Delta air cleaner mounted to the ceiling for smaller airborne particles. The two together work very well.

I have such a dust collector. As advised I just roll it from tool to tool and use a relatively short flexible pipe. It works fine for keeping the chips away so that your tools (i.e. planer sander etc) will work properly.

I am a little wary of thinking that any hobbyist type collector will really keep the air clean, especially when using a table saw or router. So, I also use an overhead dust filter and generally wear a mask when in the shop. I'm fortunate to be able to have a small area in the house that I use for clean detail work that doesn't create dust.

I’m happy with the 1 HP Delta, which I roll to each work site. I also have an air filter which works in unison with the Delta and I usually wear mask.

Thanks for the replies. It is on wheels so moving it around or placing it closest to the biggest dust makers would be logical.
