Whatsa sound salon? Provocative sounding for sure. I hope it's a way to post sound clips. We could surely use that feature here...

Sirius-ly, a place to post sound clips would be an excellent addition to
the OLF.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you Lance for adding the Official Sound Salon forum to the OLF.

    SoundSalon.com is a community
driven luthier, repair, and musicians resource. All of the content is
submitted by and for the music community.

This forum will give people a space to discuss the latest Sound Salon
articles, as well as the site in general.

    The Sound Salon website is
currently in beta, and the official launch will be on March 14th.

We hope this turns into a great resource for everyone.

For the record, SoundSaloon.com was secured February 2006, just incase
someone made a typo. Though... it could be a western version.

The Salon looks pretty neat! I think it can compliment the OLF beautifully.

I guess I don't understand this site. Looks to me like it will hurt our sponsors as many of the links are for materials from non-sponsors (as far as I know) that directly compete with our own guys. What's the deal?

Thank you for your post Ron,

The goal of Sound Salon is to add to, and work in harmony with the
existing luthier community.

I feel confident that the members of this forum will continue to support
our fine OLF sponsors, regardless of how many related websites exist.

We will also do our best to expose as many new people as possible to
the great community that already exists here at the OLF.

It is an honor to be working with the OLF, and we hope to give more
than receive.

I read the article on creating a pipe bender using a charcoal lighter and a dimmer switch. That was a really well done article.

Being an electrician I see that a commercial dimmer was used at 1000 watts. Those are more expensive than the household dimmer which is rated at 600 watts. Those have just enough power to work in this instance, making the project a bit less expensive.

Last time I purchased one it was about four bucks. The charcoal lighter was rated at 500 watts so the household dimmer is 100 watts over capacity still.

Congratulations to Mark Kett and Sound Salon on a great start March 14. These things usually start off slow and build gradually. If the effort is supposed to compliment the efforts of the OLF, then we need to give it a whirl.

I have enjoyed talking with Mark personally a while back over the phone and he was great to work with on linings and also the binding apparatus he designed and sold. KUDOS SOUND SALON and best of luck too.

Ron[/QUOTE]

We certainly appreciate the sentiment and looking out for the "home team" the OLF is a special place with a great group of people -- clearly we are biased toward our community. But in general, Lance and I both try to operate on the idea that we are not "competing" with the other sites and organizations -- whether they are traditional (ASIA, GAL) or internet based (Sound Salon, etc.)

I realize that in the past some groups have expressed a different sentiment and believe that it is necessary to compete, but we choose to think that all boats rise with the tide. As more people get exposed to the craft and the collective base of knowledge grows we all benefit. We don't see participation in any one community as mutually exclusive to participation in another.

I think most of us buy from our sponsors, certainly I buy about 90%+ of my wood and supplies from sponsors and I expect most of the rest of us do.

Okie Dokie.      That was just my first impression. I know you and Lance would do nothing that wasn't in the interest of the OLF.
