I've had a Walcom STM gun recommended to me for spraying lacquer (nitro and waterborne) on guitars. Does anybody have any experience with Walcom guns, or this gun in particular? It's cheaper than a SATA, but quite a bit more than the cheap knockoff guns...about $250US with gauge, regulator, etc. Any other recommendations for a HVLP conversion gun that doesn't need a lot of air and will put down a good finish? Any time I pay much over $50 for something, I like to be able to get parts, so this is an issue with the no-name guns as well. Thanks John |

Oh, yeah...since this post follows a couple about French polishing, you know how that went! Cheers John |

I happen to own that particular gun, and like it very much. I used it for shooting KTM-9. |

I have a Walcom Slim HVLP and have had very good experience with it, with both KTM 9 and Target USL. I have a 1.7 tip as recommended by Jeff at Homestead finishing. I recommend talking with Jeff as he is very knowledgable and helpful. |

Thanks for the input, everybody. re: tip size 1.2 is the largest tip I've seen listed for the STM, and was the recommended size from the vendor. It should be OK for nitro as well as water-based?? I'm concerned about sagging as it's never very hot in my part of the country. Thanks John |

I have the 1.2, and it's fine for ktm-9. I can't say about Nitro. Just one word of caution, make sure you clean it out real good after every use. I didn't. There is now an adjustment screw in the back that I can't turn. Duh. ![]() |

The tip size is why Jeff Jewitt at Homestead recommended th SLIM HVLP for guitars with waterborne finishing. I was lead to believe that the smaller gun was better suited to smaller instruments....but??? I clean the gun with warm water and then spray some Denatured Alcohol through it to prevent corosion, then leave enough Alcohol in cup to soak the tip, have to make sure alcohol is completely flushed before using again. |
