I recommend that you consider trying a kit guitar. A good quality kit can be had for a fraction of what one of those guitar building classes cost. Unless you can find a college that offers something, I've heard of some in other areas. I went to a 10 day class that cost $3500, and I can't remember much of what I did there. Get a good kit from LMI, StewMac, Martin, or even better OLF's own John Hall of Blues Creek Guitars. Then hang out here and other building forums, search the archives for answers, buy books and videos. You can build 6 guitars with top quality materials for the cost of a class. Just my opinion, having gone both ways. CrowDuck |

Yeah, I have studied with Frank. He is a great guy and a really fantastic guitar builder. I can't say enough about him. The time and $$ invested is well worth it. |

I live in the Chicago area (Wheeling in the northwest suburbs)and I have not heard of any guitar building classes offered in the immediate area. My recommendation would be to buy a kit (unless you are brave enough to do it from scratch), read the instructional books like Cumpiano, Sloan, Kinkade (there are others), get one of the instructional videos, and prowl the forums for information. And remember that there are many guitar makers in the area, myself included, who would be happy to get together with you if you run into problems. |
