I've been offered some Pecan wood. Would this wood
be good for guitars?

Sure it would. It's heavy, but that means go thinner to keep down the weight. Plus, with scraps you can roast jalapenos and make chipotles or smoke some fish. MMMM MMmmmmm. |

Thanks Bruce, I aleays thought Pecan had an open grain but I guess i could just fill with Zpoxy. I might see how much he has and what he wants for it. D on't need no jalapenos, just sprinkle some of that famose Dickey hot sauce and I'm good to go

I've heard that pecan is a really unstable wood. No experience, though, so I don't know for a fact. Someone needs to tryit and let the rest of us know,  , Dave. Go for it.

Pecan is identical to Hickory. About as strong and hard a wood as there is, but very plain looking. Hammer and Axe handles are traditionally made of hickory. |

Tim McKnight made some hick'ry gutiar bodies, matter of fact I have a set he sent me... Plus, I have a pecan plank, that will eventually become a pecan guitar. And it is somewhat plain as far as woods go. So is mahogany.....

Since this thread is half hi-jacked anyway, you guys and gals should see my pepper patch. Jalapenos, Chilies, Cayenne sweet, Cayenne hot, and a few tomato plants for salsa. Still looking for habanero plants...... and I'll most likely do a hotter jalapeno and bell peppers too, great in salads. |

From the book: Genus: HICORIA General characteristics: Very heavy , hard, elastic and strong. Next to true hickory, toughest and strongest American wood in common use. Machines and turns well, steam bends well, Tree deciduous, wood ring porous, annual growth rings distinct. Color of heartwood, light to dark reddish brown, sapwood white.

Bruce, my parents bedroom set was pecan. It was made in the days of solid wood construction. I remember it being a light brown color and heavy. Not much to look at, but come on now, how much time do we really spend looking at the back and sides when we are playing. And if our ears are happy, our eyes can deal. Even plain girls have something to offer. They don't all have to be runway models do they? On the gastronomical side of things, we were supposed to get 50 lbs of Hatch green chilis this this summer/fall. Hatch flooded and there was a bit of a shortage. Our friends weren't willing to part with what they could get their hands on. We have on bag left in the freezer from last year's crop. It ought to have a serious bite to it by now. |

Hi Dave I am not very experienced as a guitar builder but I have had a little experience with pecan. Several years ago I bought 5 or 6 green boards about 2X8X8'. The guy I got it from warned me to carefully sticker it for drying. I did sticker and stack it but it warped and twisted in every imaginable direction. I am currently using it in my smoker for barbequing. It is pretty much useless for anything else. I don't think I'd recommend it for a guitar. Dave |

I have quite a bit of hickory lumber (almost the same wood as pecan) available, and if I get the time I plan on trying it out in a guitar later this summer. I'll let you know then unless someone else has experimented with it. |

I have a piece of pecan and it's..... well, flat as a board. It's quite aged too. and heavy. and plain. One time I insisted my sawyer cut up a gum tree for me. He warned me it'd warp and twist immediately. He was right. I couldn't even stack two by fours right off the saw, they were quite unruly. I do not recommend using gum for anything but rocking chair runners.
Did you ever get any of that PEE CAN wood yet? |

Not yet. It was rough sawn several years ago and the guy is to old to work in his shop so he want's to get ride of it all. I just don't know if I want to mess with it. |
