Otherwise, I buy them in bulk from Euphonon...PB lights.

d'addario or dean markley coated. I am new at building, so my opinion may be of less value, but I am a pretty accomplished player and have played for about 15 years. I think coated strings are the best invention since sliced bread. The elixer strings in my opinion have to much of an unnatural feeling and are a bit overpriced, but i'd still use them also. |

I have been thru' virtually every brand from nanos, polys, even 24carat gold gimmicky strings that sounded like they'd been dragged through a cowpat and left to dry.... From Elixirs to D'Addario.... Elixir coated strings just seemed to tarnish quickly...and nanos made my guitar look like it had been played by a left-handed Italian who had just eaten a cheesy pizza and not washed his hands... In the last two years I have stuck to Martin M140 Light Strings (80/20). They are awesome, as they seem to have a very brassy sound for the first few plays which is interesting, then settles down to a consistent crisp tone for a long time. |

Check out NewTone strings. They are super expensive but last forever and don't loose that "punch" like many strings do. |

I order bulk phosphor-bronze strings from Euphonon and use them for settting up my guitars (neck, saddle, and nut adjustments). When I deliver a guitar and for my own use I use John Pearse strings. I have been playing for 35 years and building for 3 years and I have not found a string that rings so beatuifully and has as long a life. I have tried coated and treated strings but they just don't deliver the sounf the Pearse strings do. |

D'add PB light on most of my guitars. I get a good price on D'add strings here in Canada. I personally like GHS especially for some of the different sets (true-med) that they offer. I'm curious to try some of the newtone strings Paul mentioned. I've heard good things about them. Where is the best place to buy? |

Always Martin SP or SP phosphor bronze. SP+ if have have the extra cash. Custom Lights 11-52. When I was going through strings almost every other night while touring a lot and rehearsing even more, these held up the best, and I really love the way the phosphor bronzes sound. -j. |

I am always a little perplexed by how few people buy the D'addario flat tops since I like them so much. They cut down on finger noise substantially and last a long time. |

I realize that Martin strings aren't fashionable - and they may not be the very best sounding or the longest lasting, but IMHO they do sound good and they do last a long time, but most of all - I don't break them. And they aren't that expensive - relatively speaking. Strings by anyone else (and I've tried just about all) and I will break the G string within a week. Yes, I do play a lot - and I do play with a heavy attack. But the Martin SP's will take it - when no one else's strings will. |

I'm "blessed" with the body chemistry that trashes most strings in almost no time at. I've tried every new 'development' that comes down the pike, but have the best luck with D'Addario EXP Phosphor Bronze. I use .013's on my archtops; usually .012's on the flattops. For me, they sound great from Day One, and last a long, long time. Tried the Elixirs early on, and was not impressed; have since tried the Elixir Nanoweb, and liked them much better. For me, though, the EXP's do it. First type of strings that sounded best on all my instruments from guitars to mandolins. |

Right now I really like the Martin SP+ strings. If those are not available, the elixer nanoweb strings seem to do ok, but like most opinions here they do seem to tarnish and wear out quickly. Martin Bluegrass strings come in at third place. They last a good while and have a good tone. If all else fails, I like the phosphor-bronze di'adarrio strings
On my electric guitar I use only elixer strings. |
