I just want to encourage the beginning guitar makers out there. Last week an email came for a new Dickey guitar commission. Friends and family constitute many new makers build schedules, but the circle has to get larger as you go.

You gotta pay the bills, so keep doing those jobs that make you money to do that, but never give up on your dream of building. I have a few other commissions going, which is nice to have several. And I've given a few away too, those are the hardest ones to complete it seems, no financial incentive, so be careful committing to much of that.

This guitar will be really special, and after next Christmas, I'll share some details. I will say it's a Martin style OM with Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Red Spruce with a K and K pickup. Life is good.

VERY timely news indeed: For my husband sat me down today to discuss the merits of going self employed in the future, when the necessary build quality has been raised. I didn't raise the subject; he did, much to my utter shock.

I also have an opportunity to be an "Artist in residence" in my local well-attended Arts centre in 18 months to 2 years time; visitors to the centre watch the "craftspeople" at their job, which is a great opportunity for promotion.. it seems that I have opportunity to make something of this malarky.

Gives me time to make a couple more guitars....

When I say "opportunity", part of this stuff seems to be taking a life of it's own. Everyone around me who knows me are really enthusiastic about what I do, which is something I'm not used to!!!

However, to be honest, I'm cynincal this time, because I seemed to have dabbled in loads of subjects and have gotten bored quickly....I'm desperately HOPING I don't get bored with guitar making.

I took 'em camping at my cabin, and made 'em dig ditches for a new water filtration system....   

True, pay is lousy, but the food's good. Nothing like working on Spring Break.

A few minutes after this picture was taken, Ben bares his skin to his BVD's and takes a plunge in a pool of 55F water. What a day.

Sam, just relax and think long-term. If you're anything like me, you'll find that your interests are circular. In other words, if something else grabs your attention for a while you'll still cycle back to guitarmaking. Just keep your wood properly stored, and your tools in order, and you'll be ready to go when the time comes.

Also if you get bored with certain guitars you can always build something
different or start experimenting. You never know what will come of it.
