Hi guys

I'm having color issues in photoshop. When I save for web, the image
somehow changes color space and no longer matches the same hex color
in html.

For example:

In photoshop I'll measure a color as #414141
In CSS I'll match the color: #414141

When I check the web, the two are noticably different: http://
languagepool.net/index_test.php

When I slide my image in photoshop over the CSS rendered gray, they are
the same, so the color is changing during the save for web process.

The original gray in photoshop was 414141 (C: 68 M: 61 Y: 60 K: 46).
The saved gray has become 323232 (C: 68 M: 61 Y: 60 K: 46).
The CSS's gray is 414141 (C: 64 M: 57 Y: 56 K: 33).

Any ideas???

Are you saving as a .gif, .png or .jpg? .gif will truncate the color slightly but noticable!

Try converting to RGB before saving to web. I think you might be loosing your color because you are doing an RGB conversion and a JPG conversion at the same time.

You might look at using "web safe" colors. There's a small selection, but they survive intact with lower-bit color resolution. You might do ok if you're after greys.

Another problem that arises is that browsers render colors differently if they're not web safe.

I had the same problem, I think, with the dark blue on this page where the banner across the top overlaps the left column. The banner's dark blue is from Photoshop and the color in the column was from Dreamweaver. I had to just juggle them to get them to match, playing with each color to get it right. I couldn't get it to look right in Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. It would look OK in one, but not the others, so I went with IE since it's the most widely used (arrghhh). The numbers don't match, but the colors sorta do, unless you look at it on an LCD screen at a high angle. I'm probably the only one that notices. I couldn't find what I wanted in web safe colors.

Guys, thanks for talking this through. It's really the strangest issue, but I
believe I found the setting I'd switched. I've always used Save for Web
because it changes the resolution to 72dpi for you. Just a saved step. I
started having this color issue a few months ago, only, it didn't bug me
until I was trying to match these grays last night.

I believe the issue was that I somehow clicked the "Save with ICC Profile"
option. Look at these two images. The bottom has the correct color and
was saved w/o the ICC profile.

Very interesting.

Being able to ask questions like this and talk them through really goes to
show the breadth of knowledge in this forum. That's incredible in and of
itself.
