I have a Porter Cable 690 that I want to use in a table set up. I was just wondering if it is worth getting a 1/2" collet? Any thoughts or insights?

yes. they are usually available on ebay for $10-$12.

a 1/2" shank bit is much more rigid and less prone to breakage and vibration. i use a 1/2" whenever possible.

What he said!

Are you also considering a "router lift" unit? It makes setting heights of cuts REALLY easy and most will take the PC690 as a standard set up.
I've got one on my router table and it is invaluable.

The only time when it is better to not use a 1/2" collet in a router is when the bit diameter is less than 1/4". In that case it is better to stick with the 1/4" collet as the shaft of the bit is the same throughout.

What Shawn said.

Ever since getting my 1/2" collet, I won't use 1/4" bits unless I really have to (ie, truss rod slots, CF slots). Especially for heavy work, it adds monstrous amounts of stability.

I'm pondering getting a second router - either another 690 or an 890 - for my table; I use my 690 for so many tasks I don't feel like having it tied up in the table!
