While working on my first Neck, I found it difficult to sand around the curves of the neck expecially between the Nut and Headstock.

I then began to think of what I could use to make this job easier and came up with this:

An Everyday "noodle" (The kind kids use in the swimming pool). Cost-About $1.00 at a dollar store or $1.50 at Wal-Mart.

I simply cut off a section to the desired length and wrapped my sandpaper around it and sanded away.

Just wanted to share this with everyone in hopes that someone may find it useful.

Now that's using your noodle.

In the "old" days,I used to use a Bic lighter as a sanding block-the oval cross section came in handy for different radii.

I use bottles, cans, pvc pipe, dowels, whatever.

Thanks guys.

I hadn't even thought about using pipe insulation, but that would have been what I was looking for as well.

I like the amount of "give" that the foam has. It makes it harder to sand too much on one spot, but has enough support to get the job done.

Anyways, it sounds like everyone has already found many great alternatives. I'll have to give one of the harder objects, that Ron pointed out, a try and see how I like that.

Blain-
Thanks for the ideas and the thread.
I usually find that I end up rounding over edges too much if I use a lot of foam under my sandpaper. However, practically anything curved (or small and flat) is fair game for use as a sanding block in my shop.
Cheers
John

If you want it just a little softer, cover the object with cork. Cork is a great backer for a sanding form.
