As a young craftsman back in the 60's I purchased some 4/4 solid Brazilian Rosewood of good quality before the export ban. It is all 7 ft long, with about 6 pieces of +4 inch and one 8 inch width. It has been stored in temperature controlled conditions for these years and is endgrained waxed/sealed. This cannot be compared to anything available today, and is worthy of only the finest instrument use.

My question is would anyone be interested in building with BR sides without a BR back, since none of the pieces are wide enough? Not real sure about the acoustics on this one.

You may be interested in knowing that 3 and 4 piece backs are quite common!

Definitely consider a multi-piece back. Most of the (recent history) Madagascar rw backs have been made up of four pieces. If your old Brazilian has nice grain structure, it should be easy to rip down some of those 4+ inch wide pieces and get a nice matching grain at the pairing of two pieces. Done properly, you can't tell and it will make use of all matched age wood in you instrument.

Are you asking if anyone here would be interested in building you a guitar out of this material? Are you selling it?

Art Overholtzer was so committed to having the grain well quartered in his guitars that he would cut his Brazilian rosewood on the quarter and then glue up backs that had as many as 6 pieces. They all looked and I understand sounded great. Hopefully they all held together as well.

Try washing them down with naphtha...it will highlight the grain and colors, clean off the years of dust and do no harm to the wood. It will flash off fairly rapidly, so be ready to photo immediately after applying the liquid. Try to use as much natural light as possible for truer color rendition.

Don't cut anything in half yet. A 4"x42" piece would maybe yield 4 good cuts for 2 back sets (each back 20+ inches long) or 2 sets of sides about 33-34" long plus headstock overlays...if you are a good resawer. But, an 80+ inch long x 4"+ wide would allow a luthier to build an instrument from the same piece...4 pieces for a back, a side set, a fingerboard, a bridge and a headstock overlay with a bit left over to make some bindings for another project.

I'd be interested in buying some based on color/grain details.

Mr. Rosewood, it's my opinion as a long standing member here of the OLF that you do not have a right to come in here and offer your wood for sale. We already have a very very long list of suppliers here who do deserve our business as they help support this fine group of guitar builders, not only with their offerings of wood and other great guitar building aid, but by also supporting this great forum's existence by paying for their advertising.

You joined up yesterday to give yourself free advertising for some (albeit fine material) wood that you want to sell.

I would first suggest contacting the Administration of this forum, paying them some deserved fee so you can advertise on the forum, than repost your ware's for sale pending the approval of the owners of this site.

Effectively you've just taken potential sales away from our fine group of sponsors.

Rod,

Didn't see a buy and sell forum, so I posted as I did, sorry. Rod I can see your concern about all this... being a 'Brazilian Rosewood' member and all.

I'm not in the business of exotic wood sales. I'm just a older craftsman now, who has saved some Brazilian Rosewood from my apprenticeship over 40 years ago. Looking for an artisan who could appreciate and bring out the beauty of this cache of BR as I was planning to do some day. You guys are carrying the chisel now, I'm out.

Carrying this BR around(and it's heavy) for 40 years was not easy, but a labor of love. I was hoping to build myself the ultimate executive office suite some day... when I earned the right... when I felt I deserved the privilege.

Rod, I sold my business in 2000 and I'm doing fine. Wasn't looking for the $ as much as someone who appreciates the Brazilian Rosewood, and would like to bring out the best of it. You're right tho, the sponsors here ARE in it for the $, and actually have pm'd to buy it from me.

Another altruistic thought I had was to be able to spread it around to several builders here, as opposed to one luthier. In order to do that I had to know more about the build details and the members thoughts here.

But I'm at a point(in my life) now... to where if I can't find an artisan who appreciates it, I'd just as well throw it all in the dumpster. But don't give up hope yet verhoevenc, ya never know.

No worries Rosewood, just looking out for our community here.

I do hope that that beautiful wood will get used for some excellent guitars and guitar parts, that's what your heart wanted for it.

I sincerely wish the best for this forum and not knowing you, I wanted to protect our sponsors best interest first.

Having said that, I'm sure your pm box will fill quickly with questions and request to purchase.

All the best.

Well said Hesh.

Also, I find that although there isn't a 'specific' rule written in stone about selling anything on this forum, (I believe there is a certain pride in the very few rules and regulations we do have) the simple fact that our sponsors PAY to advertise on the OLF is matter enough to make this a non-issue.

How about that handle?

What is this 'rose' wood of which you speak?

I don't see this as competing with Forum sponsors. It's a special stash and he wants to do something good with it,.

Send me a 4" wide board and I'll build the best guitar I can with it and pass the deal on to a good musician. If you wish.

Rosewood, you sound like a good man. I don't know if you are aware of who Howard Klepper is, but when he tells you he will build the best guitar he can with some great wood that you have been saving for just the right project, you can be sure it will be very special. I advice you to take him up on his offer; this is the one you have been waiting for all these years.

I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of this.

I agree with Arnt. If you are looking for the type of builder that will be in the Smithsonian, Howard is your man. He'll do you proud with his creative work.

Personally, I don't think anyone, unknown to the forum, should be able to sign up one day and sell wood the next day, unless they are a paid sponsor. Anybody could do that and take your money and run, and you don't even know their name.

There *IS* a specific rule about this. If you are not a sponsor you can't sell in our forums without clearing it through us first.

We are not unreasonable people, but we have to keep a handle on this or it will quickly get out of control. Nobody "jumped on" Rosewood. In fact I sent him a nice note and invited him to let us help him sell this wood through our normal process. To insinuate otherwise is not accurate.

When John Mayes sold that stuff through the threads he came to us first and we helped create a format for that.

The sponsors come onboard with the clear purpose that they want to sell their wares to our community. There is no pretense about that. Many of us work with them nearly exclusively... Some of this is because they provide great products and services, and some is because we have become friends with many of them -- and everybody likes doing business with friends.

If we allow anyone to show up and sell items in our threads two things are going to happen. 1) The forum will quickly be overrun with people with something to sell, and 2) The sponsors will no longer see a value in paid sponsorship and they will leave.

We previously ran a "swap meet" for just these kind of scenarios and I feel that is a format that is congruent with the needs of both the community and the advertisers.

Lance and I have been talking about putting another one of these together, but we want to clear some of the projects off of our plate first.

But you do have the Luthier's Auction which I thought was designed specifically for issues like this.

As with Hesh, I am still unclear of the intensions of Mr. Rosewood. But judging by the activity.....the wood should be available as sets soon...??
