Good morning all, I'm new both here and to the luthier craft. Just getting started in my research to building and thought it would be appropriate to introduce myself to those that I will be communicating with. Question: As I am delving into this building process, is there a website that specifically outlines the parts of a guitar to include the proper names of the components? Thanks and I look forward to sharing ideas with you all. Jim

Welcome to you Jim...just hanging around here, reading lots, maybe purchasing a book, or two, will give you about as much information on the nomenclature as you'll want. All the other lingo will come as you start putting 1 + 1 together to equal 2. I know that sounds cryptic, but it isn't intended to be. Like every craft, the language is something you'll pick up along the way. You're in for a great time! Bill |

Welcome to the OLF Ron! I'm new as well and this place has been a great resource for information. Like Ron said, go to StewMac and even though I didn't end up buying their guitar kit, I downloaded the instruction manual and that was helpful. I also bought Cumpiano's book Guitar Making: Tradition and Technology which is very detailed. Do you have any idea on what type of guitar you are going to build? |

Thank you all. I'm also a master scrollsaw artist and have TONS of exotic hardwoods I'm planning on incorporating into my first project. I'm starting small, soprano uke for my daughter. My intention is to incorporate some fretwork into the face of the uke (again, just experimenting). |

Welcome Jim. I'm another new member here, and I have learned a ton of good stuff just searching archives, and reviewing all of those great links at the top of the Forum page. Each one has wonderful, detailed information that is useful and informative. The hard part is concentrating on other stuff once you are hooked here. I have also discovered that no question is too basic to get some great answers. The real beauty is that you will get so many views, that you end up really understanding the depth of the question in a greater way than you thought. |

Back at ya Jim! Welcome. A few of the guys here build ukes, so you'll probably get some helpful advice from them if you ask. I bet we'll all benefit from your scroll sawing knowledge, too. As for component names--just remember, it's an end graft, NOT a butt wedge!!!

Welcome Jim, If you're anything like me, you will spend hours lurking in the archives. Most of the time, what you're looking for is there if you spend the time altering your keywords a little. I like to go to File>save as... when I find a page that is particularly useful. Saves you considerable time trying to find it later if you save the web page using a name by which you'll later be able to recall the subject matter. Good luck! Darren |
