For those who are not experts at the use of hand-tools (THAT  WOULD BE ME!), there is an excellent article in the new issue of "Fine Woodworking" on how to use a bench plane for smoothing and squaring stock.  It has good points on sharpening with a slight arc on the smoothing iron, ways to approach the work, etc.  I found it very informative, and easy to understand.

I have a couple of those guides.  Actually picked my last one up on a special at Woodcraft for $5.95 - couldn't leave it sitting there.  I use that and sandpaper - various grades up to 1200 wet/dry stuck to a peice of 1/4" glass, then a leather covered gizmo with honing compound on it.  Seems to work fine.  I had just never seen anything specific to how to approach the stock, or how to put a slight curve to the edge, and I happen to  take the mag, and saw the article.  It seemed logical.  I'm sure the DVD's would be much more informative and in depth.

Thanks, that's good information.  I plan to try that right away.  I remember reading in Cumpiano's book he said to take the corners off the plane iron, but I didn't know what he meant, until now.
