Timely Cracks

About two weeks ago while closing up this guitar a timely crack appeared on the side of the lower bout. ARRRGG!!! I had no choice but to take two steps back and start again,
I had a matching set of sides so it was only a matter of time, and not materials, that was until I tried to remove the back from the cracked set of sides.

That did not go well

So, I was on the hunt for some more Coco. Brock Poling came up with a fantastic replacement set for me. My customer specified a sapwood center strip, that is indeed what we got. Here are some current progress shots. With a little luck, I should be back on track by this weekend.
The timing is bad, since HGF is approaching fast, but I really had no alternative, this one has to take priority, and son-of-gun if it ain't fighting me all the way!

Braces glued on with epoxy,




New OMFS mold with new side set.

I managed to knock this set of rims and the back out in a weekend + a day, that is a record for me! Its what can happen if the KIDS leave me along

Fret not Lance...I've heard that horses that are hardest to break make the most spirited, loyal steeds. If this guitar is fightin' you, maybe that's indicative of how great it's going to be.

Lance, I really like your set up! I’m gonna have to get, or make a mold one of these days.

That coco back looks outstanding, and I love the sapwood center strip!

Curious though, why reverse kerfing on one edge but, not the other?

Also, I’ve not seen braces shaped like that before, could be just me, seeing something in the
pictures not exactly right, but, they do look a little beefy. I’m sure you planned it that way for a
reason. Just wondering!

the braces are beefy right now, I glue them on full width and profile them after there dry, but before I put the center strip in.

I feel your pain Lance. It is just wierd how some guitars fight you all the way to the end. I have a retop to do that is just one more thing with an OM that I'm building. Darned thing is finished, Tony did a great job, but the crack in the top is going to make me have to replace it.

Lance, Looks good but that wide sapwood,I don't care for myself.I don't mind a small strip in the center but this is too much IMHO. Good luck with the rest of this build,I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Very nice wood selection...I like the sapwood.. I sincerely hope things go better for the remainder of the instrument. I hate when *crap* like that happens. It can kill your motivation.

Thanks for YOUR concern Lance. No, in my case it was not the Cedar/Braz guitar, but another with an AD top which I hated to waste, not to mention the work and finishing cost.

Your new coco looks great and I will wager the customer is getting a prettier instrument for all of this.

One weekend and a day is really moving.
