I’ve been busy over the last week (working on guitars mostly) or so and haven’t had much of a chance to be around the forum. Looks like there have been some good discussions going on. This is going to be the first in a series of threads on designing an acoustic bass. I have had a few people tell me they would be interested in a bass if I could build one. I would like to build one as a test before I get an actual orde. I would particularly like to hear from those of you who have built basses at one time or another. So my first question is about wood combination. What woods should I use and why? I am planing on it being a 4 string, jumbo body, with a 34 in scale. I will start another thread later for discussing different design features which are unique to a bass. But for know I want help deciding what wood I will use. Thanks Josh |

You could probably use any wood. I have an acoustic bass and without a pickup there is not a lot of volume. The only type I've seen that can cut through other instruments alone acoustically are those monster mariachi guitars. However, that is just my opinion. I know David Berkowitz builds basses and uses mahogany so hopefully he will drop by and give you some help. |
