Well, I finally finished #6. Nothing too exciting, I built it for a friend, who is very musical, but not a guitar player, yet! So it is braced very lightly. This is my first experience with parabolic bracing, I like it. Have fun Stats: Back and Sides- EIR Top- Sitka Neck- Mohogany/curly maple laminate FB and bridge- Ebony Binding-Lignum Vitae Rosette- Paua Scale length- 25.25 Finish- Mcfadden "transparent" filler  , Mcfadden Sealer, Mcfadden Nitro

Definitely like the green wood stuff. I was also glad to see such a nice looking guitar without a back strip. I just joined a back set of EIR with no back strip looking almost identical to this. Hope mine turns out as nice as this one. nice

Nice, Matt, I like the wood combo. I really like the drain hole in the bottom, necessary in the Arkansas humidity.

Hey "y'all", Thanks for all the great comments. Hesh- Take a wild guess, I still don't know if it's Lignum or vera, who cares it looks cool. 
Joe and Steve K- "What didn't I like about it". I ordered it from Grizzly, and didn't know exactly what it was. When I opened it it was a tan goop, which I figured was an oil based filler. But to answer your question, in some pores it did dry transparent, in others it dried a tan color. I'm used to epoxy pore filler so this was upsetting. But then I'm the idiot who tried it out rather than just use epoxy. Also, Steve K, this one's going to Oregon. I'm bringing my Hondo RW w/armrest to the LINT show. That one should be done this weekend, pics to follow. |

I like how you got a great saddle height and still maintained a low action... I hope someday I can achieve a similar result!

Thanks again everyone. With the bridge I wanted something "birdlike", but it works well. Because the wings point forward I can pretty much guarantee they will be on top of the X-brace regardless of splay or scale length. carlton- I've never really used scalloped braces, in the sense that they were scalloped before hand. I have scalloped later to voice the top. This was my first effort to maintain a parabolic shape while voicing. What I like about parabolic is it is forgiving, structurally and tonally 1. Structurally- I built this intentionally light so my friend could use light strings (10s or 11s). I strung it up with 10's initally, but I hate 10's so I put 12's on, fearing bellying. I have 12's on now and there is no bellying and only a little change in the action height. 2. Tonally- being a drednaught it is bass dominant, but it doesn't overpower the other frequencies. |
