This is Phil and myself in his motor coach. The friend I traveled with to the show has maintained a thirty year long friendship with Keaggy. Both are gracious and loving guys and I'm honored to be included in their fraternity. Dave, you bet, I had a great time. Although today I do have a bit of Mazda 6 Lag goin' on in my head. The guitar in the pic was just restrung with a new broken set of GHS phosphor bronze lights. Earlier, I passed on two sets of Dean Markley Alchemy strings to Phil that Jon Rooff had given to me at the Dean Markley booth. You guessed it, the G string was gone out of two sets of GHS Phil had, so he broke yet another set, selecting the Alchemy G string to put on his '71 Les Paul already strung with the new GHS set of Lights. See, we can all get along. The concert was great, true harmony. THE TWO PHILS, Love and Keaggy, in the restaurant of the Rennaisance Hotel. My buddy is an avid music lover and sometime acoustic guitar player. He is married to Donna and has a couple of girls ages 6 and 7 or thereabouts. A great guy. Phil is humble and easy to visit with and be around. Here is one more pic I took yesterday of my buds. I had one other friend who traveled there on Friday night to enjoy more of the show, his name is Marty, that's him on the right with Phil and Phil. Do you make your friends pose for touristy shots like this? |

Oh, Marty is an expert with the Game and Fish Commission. Lately he's endured many calls from folks like me over the Ivory-billed Woodpecker which mentally at least has been resurrected from the dead in our state. He patiently coaches me on my bird-watching skills and reveals I'm seeing the gangly Pileated. I wonder what they taste like? Phil and I recommend Taco Cabana in Dallas. |

Oh, and he'd kill me if I didn't tell you he'd built two Martin kits, a d 18 and a d 28. He gave the first to his son and kept the d28 as his main player. He can flat tear up an electric, very enjoyable to listen to. Another member of the worship team, but he feels more comfortable not leading. Drips with talent on guitar. ... and he's a great guy too, plus a grandpa. |

Does the Dallas Guitar Show feature contemporary handmade steel string guitars at all, or is it geared toward electrics and/or vintage guitars? |

Todd, you really do have to look harder for acoustics at this show, but they are there. The music store owners bring all their stuff and you can pick up amazing vintage instruments from about any maker you can imagine. Our time flew by, but one stop was a maker from Brazil. I recognized an acoustic bass wood he'd used and had displayed backwards on the stand to see the pretty Imbuia or Brazilian Walnut. Then as I looked around at his variety of instruments I noticed a gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood under each guitar stand. $800 a set. He brought it through customs with not so much as a sidways look from the customs agent he said. (I wanted to, but I didn't) While we were outside at one stage venue, my buddy elbows me that the guy walking past us is none other than Paul Reed Smith. He was circling the venue like an expectant father. Those players could shred. And that's what my ears felt like as we moved on through the exhibits. Crazy wild performances by guys I don't know. |
