I just finished assembling the body of my second florentine cutaway guitar. I have done one before but I didn't put binding across the sharp edge of the outline. I just mitered the sides so that it was a nice tight joint there.
How should I put binding on the sharp edge? Do I use a regular strip of binding? Does it go on the inside of the cutaway curve or on the outside? Any info and pictures would be helpful.

Here is one way of doing this.



Bind the top and back and then use a file to remove material at the tip of the cutaway. Then miter a piece in place.

I think the mitered ones look best as Robbies diagram shows .They are , however, difficult to get tight joins ,particularly when you have side purfling to consider .

I bound the soundboard first and got a good miter at the florentine junction . I then cut (with a chisel) an angle off it for the cross piece to fit. The cross piece angle was done on a disk sander ( and miter table ) . Next I bound the back and mitered the florentine junction . I cut the tip angle off to receive the cross piece of binding/purfling , (like I did the top) Now ,, here's the big tip ! I made another cross piece , identical to the one I was to fit on .( but shorter so it would easily trial fit between the top and back bindings) . With this spare piece I adjusted it's (compound ) angle on the disk sander until I got a perfect fit with the binding ( AND SIDE PURFLING ) . Having the disk sander now set to the correct angle , I then disk sanded the cross piece I am to use .

I'm trying to post a pic but it won't do it at the moment . Will try again shortly.

Hope this helps ,and you understood my process. There may be another way of doing it ! just couldn't think of one . Sure was tricky . An unmitered cross piece would be a whole lot easier !

Billy , Those Neutrino's usually sand out nicely . The quarks are typical on well quartered wood. I like to make a feature of them actually.

Hey Guys !,,,, the picture ain't that big ,,, the guitar is 60 foot long

Nice to be able to show an incredibly enlarged picture of ones miters

My binding strips are .080x 1/4". I can't use a strip like that for the sharp edge can I? Maybe I can laminate. What are the dimensions of the binding strips you guys are using for the sharp edge? Are you mitering the ends and gluing it on square and then shaping it or what?
