I'm glad to finally be able to post a few shots of my 2nd and 3rd, built side by side & just recently completed.

The "blonde"

  • Euro maple B & S, sitka top, mac. ebony fingerboard & fittings, fully bound

  • Kent Armstrong handmade 12-pole PAF with thumbwheel volume

  • Gotoh 510 21:1 tuners

  • 17" lower bout, 2 13/16" depth, 25"scale, 1 3/4"nut

  • finish is aniline dye on bare wood (sanded back to white & reapplied), then system III & Target Ultima

The "redhead" is the same but for Englemann top, 3 1/4" depth, 1 11/16"nut,  Schaller M6 tuners, unbound neck & head.

This also gave me a chance to try out Paint Shop Pro for the first time - it's a hoot!

Thanks for taking the time.

Now that is two fine looking guitars!

It is amazing how the binding on the headstock adds some "bling" to it.  Good Job!

Splendid work, Dave. I'm currently finishing a pair of mandolins based on Benedetto's blueprint, and have woods already waiting for a pair of matching guitars. I may bend your ear a bit when I get started!

Those are beauties! What is Paint Shop Pro? How did you find the dyeing
process?
Great work.

Beautiful work Dave!

Are these truly your second and third builds, or just your 2nd & 3rd archtop
builds?

Either way, truly impressive work.

Incredibly beautiful guitars, Dave. Great photos too.

Are these guitars for you to keep and play, or did you build them for someone else?

Awesome finish on that beautiful maple. I am so excited to see people use the tiger maple as I intend to use it on my first build.
Excellent job.

Dave, Dave , Dave, those are fantastic. you did an outstanding job, besides I think we need more archtops around here! Did you use parallel or X-braceing.

Thanks Shane...love the 510's!

I went ahead & got some extra-fine menzerna. I think it really improved the finish (FWIW)

Thanks for all the kind words guys (...don't stop!) With all the beautiful work & great dialogue in this forum, it's great to give something back. (need more archtop builders though, as Matt says)

Danny, Paint Shop Pro is a "poor man's" Photoshop. Water dyeing bare wood is problematic - works great for sanding back & "poppingthe grain". Not so great with softwoods, sandthroughs & matching. (Tips welcome)

Chris, they are my 2nd & 3rd completed guitars. (In the mid-90s, I built a Larivee clone - it's "nearing completion") I've done a violin, if that counts.

Bob, as it stands, these are for me. I want to get betterbefore selling to strangers I think. (There are a few "issues" on these & things I'd like to improve upon, but I supose that never ends.) By the way, I tried your approach, which you generously shared earlier, for the screwless trussrod cover & am grateful.

Mucho kudos Dave! I'm with Billy...I'm really drawn to the "redhead". But redheads are so sexy anyway.
