I have some 1/4 " OD, 1/8" ID carbon fiber rod that I had bought for my kite. Would these work for strengthening the neck of my ukes? |

You really need solid form rectangular section as described above as there is far too much flex in round tubing. Have a look at the Los Alamos Composites Web Site, best price and the right stuff. Oh, I don't know about 'no good'; I know of at least two builders who use tubes in their necks. They add a bit of stiffness, even things out, but not crazy amounts to already stiff neck woods. Rectangular sections will add more stiffness, and I'm not planning on switching from 1/8" x 3/8" any time soon; just bought myself 30 rods from LAC recently, great stuff, great service, price was definitely right and the quality's right up there! |

I have some of the round graphite rods or tubing from a hi performance kite and some of the LAC solids, there really is no comparison. Whilst it is quite stiff, the tubing is designed to flex a little to load the cut of the sailcloth and shape the kite. The solid rectangular stuff from LAC does not flex much at all and it's rectangular form makes it much easier to fit. I do agree that you could use round stock, but I just do not see much point, in a uke neck I do not see much point for using graphite period. Cheers Kim |

My kite rods have a 1/16" thick wall so there is no flex. You are probably correct that a uke doesn't need a carbon fiber reinforcement. |
