Egg white as pore filler?

Does anyone these days use egg whites as pore filler, and what is the process?

I know most or all of you used pre-prepared pore filler, but I heard on the grapevine somewhere that some luthiers HAVE used egg white.

I am not expecting much of a response, I'm just curious.

It's really good. It dries super hard and clear. One method is to put it on and then work it in with sandpaper so that some wood dust mixes in with it as it is pushed into the pores. Very effective and very solid. It's just a bit more time intensive than epoxy or oil based pore fillers.

Thanks for the reply. Now I'm tempted to use the stuff, as I have now outspent my guitar spending budget for this month...

Now here's another wierd question...Is the stuff literally applied after being seperated from the yolk, or beaten to fluffly whites? <feels foolish for asking>

You're right Bill. We've talked about this relatively recently. And if my faulty memory serves, Colin is quite proficient at using egg whites as a pore filler.

I wouldn't whip them at all. I think that might trap air in the pores and make them white rather than clear. Test on scrap! Just as you said, seperate the yolk from the white and work it in using sandpaper. Work in small areas as it dries very quickly, and very hard.

I did check the archives, there are a few discussions, but there was no "how to". I managed to glean the handy information that it tends to dry fast.

    I've heard that you add onions, peppers and cheese and it's works outstanding!

   As I've understood it they are just pressed dryed and sanded like the credit card/epoxy method, but Paul's method sound like a good idea too, even though I've never used them. If you use egg whites Sam, I'd be curious how it works.
