Shane, you going to use those to haul your gear up in the hills for felling trees? Sherpa's eh?
Hey Rod, Every once in a while I think about that, and Mario DaCosta advertises that he uses his Llama for that purpose but I don't think that I will be using them for that (and I don't think Mario does either). It just isn't that practical, it means a seperate trailer for them and you still need to lead them and although they can pack about 1/3 of their body weight it is still only about 75 to 100 pounds. And you would still need to train them to do that. ATV's and other small equipment is just a more practical option. But if there was a very sensative area that needed accessing I might consider using Falco for that. He is strong and very even tempered. Shane |
Hey Anthony, I am not certain about the fibre thing. What I would really like to do is find someone locally that would spin it and use it, I would probably just give it to them and have them make a scarf for the kids or something in exchange. But the Llamas do need a shave so I will have find someplace for it! Shane |

We've talked about getting alpacas or llamas when we finally find a place large enough for them. As for the wool, if you have trouble finding someone to take it off your hands, please get in touch with me. I know several ladies that would love to have it. One has a harness loom in her basement. She's, ah, really into fibre arts. |

They look like they're smiling for the camera ('cept for Rocky--he's pretty inscrutable). Um, so why DO you have these critters? Guard Llamas? |

hey Carlton, That was indeed the original intent. We have predators that pick off our chickens every once in a while and Llamas just don't like perdators. We have a lots of property (45 acres) so thought we should get something to share the land so the Llamas would pull double duty. But housing, feeding and caring for Llamas to protect chickens that you can replace for a few bucks each isn't really a logical/practical approach. But who says that everything you do has to make sense! So here they are ![]() Shane |
