Here's what I've been up to lately.

all three are for personal use (yes I know there are marks on the side of the 00!!)

the biggie is a walnut/cedar acoustic bass. full fender scale, rosewood fingerboard on a hog/walnut/hod lam neck

middle is a 00 (roughly) made from leopard wood/cedar fingerboard is rosewood again with the neck being mahogany, cherry, walnut, cherry, mahogany

the baby of the lot is a maple/spruce mandonaught fingerboard is (you guessed!!) rosewood and rthe neck is walnut.





I'm loving the look of the leopardwood!!!

Beautiful work x 3!  Nice details and wood selection on all of them. I also like the shop with the yellow hanging plugs (I guess thats what they are) - how convenient.

yeah, but sadly I have to move everything out before the pupils come in!!

ah well, at least I didn't have to buy the band saw, the circular saw, the drill press, the face sander, the air compressor etc etc etc etc!!!!!

I sure like the Leopardwood as well. The others are far from shabby as well!

Martin,

Can you tell us a bit more about the acoustic bass? There isn't much information out there on designing acoustic basses. What is your bracing pattern, how thick is the top, how deep is the body, etc. etc. Anything you're willing to share. Is it a copied design, or are you designiimg/engineering this yourself?

Yup, yup, yup---they're all great.
However, my eye, too, is drawn to that leopardwood.
Quite attractive!

Martin,
   Nice pieces! They all look great and that leopardwood is so nice. I've used
it for fngerboards and bridges in the past and have loved the look of it every
time.

I'm a bit of a "seat of the pants" builder.

here's the bracing before carving.

my THINKING is that over braced = loss of bass, so UNDER braced = extra bass .......... upn to the point that the top rips apart!!!




the body is as big as I could reasonably go.

I reused the mould I made for the doubleneck.......

Hey, Martin, on that double neckker and the dred in the foreground of the first pic, the sound hole seems quite a bit smaller than I'm accustomed to, what diameter sound hole do you use?

nowhere near my notes but the double was small as the bracing was a crazy lattice that got out of hand and that was as big as would fit!!

the dread in the the foreground is a bass made in the same mould. I read somewhere that ENLARGING the soundhole made a guitar more trebley.........

so..........

well, I'll let y'all know when the strings are on!!

both were tight to get my big hands through the soundhole, so I'm GUESSING 3 1/2"

bridge an offcut of the neck
rosette leopardwood
bone nut & saddle
rosewood pins
Gotoh Tuners
eT-5 preamp/tuner with an under saddle piezo

OK, good bits?

well it looks good, sounds good and feels great to play. from a distance of 3 feet or more it's BEAUTIFUL!!!

bad bits?

well there are two bubbles in the scratchguard, but hopefullty I'll get those rubbed out.

there is a score on the headstock.

there was a wee bit of tear out on the upper bout cutting the binding.

the heel body join isn't the tidyest.......

but I LOVE IT!!!!

Martin! Thats really .  Are you the artist too?  Great tone on that guitar.  Clean separation of notes with no mud.  Very good job.
