Back in November, T. Rein and Andrew at Hibdon Hardwoods sent out 10 sets of granadillo to 10 different OLF builders to use and evaluate. I was lucky enough to get a set, and honored to build with it.

I matched it with a AAA Lutz top from Shane (High Mountain Tonewoods) and some Cocobolo (for bindings, FB, Bridge, and HS.

I really liked working with the Granadillo. It smells nice, machines great, and sounds maybe a little like Walnut or Koa.   Which I like a lot. I thought it would sound more "rosewoody"

This may be the best sounding guitar I've made. It has a big round low-end, but still has a very balanced voice... I'd like to keep it!

You know there are a lot of good looking guitars that show up on this forum. In fact there are a lot of very good looking guitars that show up on this forum. I must say however, this is one of the very best I have ever seen. Your attention to the cosmetic detail and use of the natural beauty of the wood and the way that you've used the different woods in combination to continue a theme makes this effort simply outstanding. Stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Having just finished a Granadillo guitar, I  know exactly that smell you are talking about.  I liked it so much, I used it for the fingerboard on my current build.

I buiit a granadillo guitar a couple of years ago from a set I got from LMI. It was much browner, not red like your set. It made a nice sounding guitar, but wasn't nearly as nice to look at. Does anyone know which is the more common color for Granadillo?

Bob--excellent guitar! The Granadillo looks so much like Cocobolo, at least on my monitor, that it could pass easily for Coco. Interesting that it doesn't sound "rosewoody". Is the Granadillo as dense as a rosewood, or is it more like Koa or walnut in that regard also?

I like that a lot. A lot of thought went into that guitar and ideas that work and combine really well. I particularly love the wood you chose for the neck - the light wood flows into the sapwood centre of the back and the centre stripe and heelcap morph out into the rest of the back. As Steve said the cocobolo fits the grenadillo really well. I associate grenadillo in my head with red because of grenadine - I don't know if it's the same tree.


Lovely fit and finish and the ebony tuner bottons just complete the visual effect. Shane's Lutz is something else isn't it both in looks and sound? I'd love to hear what it sounds like - hope it becomes a keeper.

Well I'd have to say that wood was lucky to have a guy like you to use! One
of the nicest guitars I have ever seen.

Great use of sapwood. Came together very nicely. I like how the reverse of the wood value in the neck lamination compliments the opposite effect in the sapwood.

I am a big fan of sapwood in guitars especially cocbolo and BRW, as well as Zircote, but I can add granadillo to that list now!!
Very fine craftsmanship doesnt hurt either!
Im glad it sounds as fantastic as it looks, imagine when it opens up a bit!
