Another good story about some wood, and this haul has real useable dimensions, thats for sure..!
A kind man I know said last couple weeks, that
"blessings would be coming my way in the next short while, he just felt it" he said.
Well the following day was a really realy bad day.. the next few after that were far from exceptional.
I thought he must be off his rocker to think what did,
but... sure enough, over the last week or so I have started to have incredible luck {well call it}.
Ive found some really great tools at the Swap Meet {stuff I really need} and Hesh was kind enough to send me his plans for the W/F binding jig, the laburnum I had stored a few years ago turned out to be more amazing wood than I could have imagined it would be, and now todays developments.
Well I may have told you guys about a windstorm score I made last winter. It was a beautiful limb of some of the burliest apple Ive ever seen..
Well I thought that was great, but a few days ago a fellow I know from the local rentals place told me of a development that>
"he knew about... where the trees would be coming out - apple,.. he said,.. can you use that?"
"Of course" I replied
its not an ideal wood for instruments as far as I know but it will make great plane bodies etc I figured{no pun intended}.
It just so happens upon further investigation that the apple trees are the "same burly old apple" trees that I got the original branch from...
Theyre gnarly as heck, and pretty danged big too!!
Im really stoked about this one!!!!
Only now I have to organize a wood collecting party....and a proper storage area for all this wood piling up, all good problems.
As I said in another thread theres a momma of an alder tree coming down on the property that I have dibs on too!
Im really grateful for all the wood fortune Im having lately... thanks be to where or whom they properly belong.
Cheers

PS If anyone knows good uses for apple burl wood Im all ears.. I have been thinking on some old wooden handplane projects I have in mind, and possibly rosettes and headplates. What do you think?

Cool stuff Charlie,

Rosettes and headplates with burlly apple would look cool. Now, how does this stuff smell? If it smells nice you could use it for side braces to prevent cracks etc...

huh...... wha?
guitars....... oh man, wait a minute -
I was building a guitar man, uhhhhh
where did I put that thing???
Hey, has anybody seen a guitar....
Oh wait never mind - I was holding it..
Hahahahaha
what was I talking about....

Bob...
Mabye I better stick with headplates and such!
Oh and sorry about your beloved Sabres, I thought they were gonna dominate in the playoffs,
however...when I saw they were going up against the Sens I had to root against them, though.
Canadian pride and all that. We want the Cup back - its been far too long!
GO SENS!!!
Cheers

Charlie, apple makes great handle wood. I used it to replace the plastic handle on a friends chisel. He just loved it.

Good for you Charlie, I'm happy for you and I'm sure you'll find some neat projects. And BTW I'm all for the cup returning to Canada, As the AVS didn't even make the playoffs and I'm getting real tried of watching The Wings win.

Charlie,
Those fruit woods are great for turning, handles, etc.. With great burl, the possibilities are endless. Veneer it onto anything!
Throw your scraps in the grill when cooking meats.
Good luck with the acquisitions.
