OK, so I recently finished a commissioned inlay that was a bit out of the ordinary, to say the least. A customer got me to inlay Optimus Prime (the robot, from Transformers) on the 12th fret of a fretboard for a LP he's building. That got me wondering what sort of strange requests others have gotten, so let's see your weirdest works!

Very Cool Optimus Prime... Not quite a match for a LP...it would be better suited to a more dramatic body shape... How about an electric body that could "transform" from one shape to another...it would play on the transformer theme and would be a trip for a thrasher

What an amazing request.  It looks really good though, if that is really possible. This thread has potential to be fun for us watchers.

Bob--Looks like you may have stopped the inlays just short of the fret slots?

Hi there,

NICE work Bob...!!!

Here is a photo of my strangest commission...  a goat fur covered guitar with 50's danelectro pick-ups, Tone-Pro hardware and hand made moose horn knobs...!!!  I'm sure you figured out that this guitar is gonna play some country-western slide licks!

Marc,
That is Fabulous!
As strange as it looks, I bet it "feels" great to play.
Good to see others thinking outside the cage, I mean box..

Wade,

It is just want the client wanted...  a guitar that leaves no one indifferent when played onstage.

It is really fun to play!  The action is a little on the high side since it will mainly be played slide...

a 6/12 acoustic doubleneck.....

I built it not having a CLUE what I was doing, but it came out structurally sound at the end of the day and the guy who asked for it loves it.

Your guitars will outlast a nuclear winter, Martin, that's for sure.

Glad your pal likes it. Hope he's got a large bedroom.

Will you ever build anything like that again?

Marc--I recently shipped an archtop to a "French speaking kind" in Montreal. He seems like a really neat guy. What gives?

Nelson, we are very friendly bunch in Montreal...  unfortunately, some of us still buy guitars from the US while some very good ones are made here...!!!  ;-)

Nelson[/QUOTE]

Certainly did, gotta leave a bit of meat for the fret to grab. The frets will completely cover the bare area.

Thanks to the rest of you for the compliments, the customer was very, very happy with it and wanted a quote on another board as soon as he received it.

That fur guitar is awesome, looks like something Ellie Erikson would do...
