I'm nearing the point of putting finish on the mandolins I've been slaving over. I'm spraying Target USL (Same as StewMac's waterborne). I'm planning some sort of sunburst on the one mando; colors yet to be determined, but probably will hand-rub it with the Colortone stains. I've read that it's best to seal the burst before spraying with the waterborne topcoats, since they may reactive the stain. Any suggestions? Is USL compatible with shellac, for instance?

Thanks in advance!

YES
Shellac works under h2o finishes.
I use it all the time .
I seal with Shellac fill pores -sand flush and seal with Shellac again !
Then spray the water base.
NEver had a problem !!

Rick .. I pore filled/sealed with system III between water soluble aniline dye and Target Ultima on my archtops. I can say the epoxy did not pick up any colour. (FWIW Stewmac told me about a year ago that their waterbourne is made by Target to their specs. and is not Ultima)

Sorry to take so long to reply !
The swap meet has me stoked !!!!

I fill with the clear H2O filler or a colored filler -I like the Lmii stuff -their own stuff -glass beads or something like that !
I have gotten away from the color fillers on my guitars
(use them for repairs)i LIKE THE LOOK OF THE NATURAL PORES WITH THE CLEAR FILLER!

Mc
