I stopped guitar work for a couple of days to help my brother. He built an heirloom toy chest for his granddaughter out of salvaged cyprus (some with spalt). It is all pegged and dovetailed with no metal fasteners used. Anyway he asked me to inlay one or two butterfiles into the top, so I reluctantly agreed, but I'm glad I did. Each butterfly is cut from different wood: Purpleheart, walnut, bloodwood, spalted maple, birdseye maple, and tulipwood. All cut on the scroll saw and inlaid freehand with the dremel. A little tricky because the top is domed with about a 30", or so, radius. I think it came out good, though.

Thanks, guys, much appreciated. It wouldn't have bothered me much if it was on something I'd built, but cutting chunks into something that someone else has spent many hours on is scary.

I can understand you saying it was a little scary taking to your Brothers fine work with a dremel...be enough to give a man butterflies I reckon.

Well done mate your work has added a very fine touch to a great piece of work and you can feel proud in the knowledge that your Bro has such confidence in your skills that he trusted you to add the detail for him.

Great team work, great family experience.

As far as routing chunks into other people's work that's all guys like Paul and me do!

Thanks, Craig, much appreciated. You and Paul must have nerves of steel. My eyes aren't good enough any more for dealing with much inlay, but it is fun (when it works out). You and Paul certainly have nothing to worry about from me.    You guys are both world class.
