I've heard stories of crews on the old sailing rigs abandoning ship because they couldn't take the smell of their POC cargo... Maybe they knew something? I've driven 15 hours at a stretch with a load of POC in the back of my van, and I can attest that the smell does get to you after awhile.... |

Interesting Michael. I'm wondering if maybe I'm more sensitive (yes, sensitive said with a slight lisp)to the oils than others. Maybe what I think I'm "smelling" is infact injesting the oils and having some sort of minor reaction. I don't know, but I can't stand the stuff. I restacked my wood the other day (client wanted a set that was on the very bottom)and when I moved the one set of PO I about gagged. |

Michael, As one of your famous citizens once remarked, it's OK if you don't inhale |

In general, woods that are highly resistant to rot such as the "cedars" and redwood, are also highly toxic. They contain natural chemicals that are very similar to man-made fungicides and pesticides. So far as I know, these are not the same chemicals that give the cedars their pungent smell. Redwood does not have that smell, and it is one of the most rot and insect resistant as well as the most toxic woods. But it appears that the pungent oils (which probably are insect repellent) and the natural fungicides and pesticides tend to be found together. |
