Hi all, As I understand it, maple fingerboards have heavy duty layer of polyester finish on them to protect them from string wear. What's a fellow to do when trying to level such a fingerboard? I mean I can't spray polyester when I've finished taking the hills out of the fingerboard. My friend has a fender Jazz bass with a pretty serious bump over the bit where the neck is bolted on. My initial thoughts is to plane off the maple fingerboard and put on a fresh, rosewood one for him. Nice if there was some thing I could do to keep the Maple F.B, though. BTW this isn't a vintage instrument. Thanks for any help. Stefan |

maple fb's are usually sprayed by the factories after they are freted, and the finish sanded off the frets. if you were to remove the fb you wouldn't want to plane it, rather remove the board with heat. but i'm a bit puzzed by your description of "the bump ... where the neck is boltted on". doesn't sound like a typical fender neck joint problem. any photos? |
