I have seen some of our sponsors advertising pearl nuts and saddles.
Have any of you used them???? Pros??? Cons???
Are they hard to shape?
Do they wear well????

TIA

It hard to find a pearl saddle in MOP long enough for a guitar. If you do they are great energy transfer devices. and look sweet. The bad news is they are subject to chipping. Like anything. The harder it is the more brittle it is. They are very common on mandolins and banjos.

I think Andy DePaule has some fresh water Snail blanks big enough for guitars but I have never used them.

Thickness is and issue as well. It is pretty much impossible to come up with nuts over 1/8" thick. It just a shell thickness issue

I've got to get some pearl from MOP supplies in the next few weeks Andy. Martin is just up the road from me so I'll get a couple and give them a whirl.

Might be a month before I test them out but will report back.

Cheers

i don't thive i've ever heard a guitar with mop nut or saddle, but in mandolins they tend to give an almost brittle, very clear ring to the instrument. i don't think i would like it in a guitar, but that's purely subjective supposition; others certainly might.

i'll be interested to hear how it goes.

I have some of both the MOP and snail nut blanks from Andy .. they are HUGE .. like 2 inches long, 3/16 thick, maybe 7/16 high, plenty for any guitar pretty much - nice figure on the MOP too, the snail is interesting,. some greenish brown streaking in some pieces.

What I meant Tony is that if you were replacing a 1/4" nut it would be hard to find that thick of a piece. Saddles are not as big of an issue. I making new guitar it easy to accommodate a 3/16 nut or even less.

well then again maybe not Michael .. the MOP from Andy (just measured) is .247, .255, .252 - the snail is all over .300 thick - piece of cake.
