Spent Monday afternoon at the park downtown. We have a nice one, with carnival rides running while the weather's nice. Wife, kids and I went for my wife's birthday, then a nice Mexican dinner and the restaurant crew didn't embarass her too much.

Got some shop time. Finally got my bamboo inlay done. Some may remember this from last year. It was to have gone on the FB around the 12th fret of a little koa terz that's still on the shelf, but it would have gotten too chopped up with frets running across it. So it's going on the headstock (mad rose) of a koa 000.


After long deliberation over the braces, finally closed up the body.

Kind of like Uncle Albert I did not do a bloody thing all day.

But really we figured we have not seen enough rain this spring.(just a slightly toung in cheek remark) So we drove to Dallas to see our daughter, Son-in law and the grand kids.

In between 2 emergency surgeries, I did a little neck work.....

I shaped and sanded the neck for #11, closed the box on #11 and  glued and braced the back for #12. In the mean time I worked on surfacing the maple lumber for a new dining room table I'm building.

Somewhere in the middle of Arkansas......

well, my workshop is in school, so I did nothing build related over the week end.......

but in the last week I've had 23 free 40 minute teaching periods as the senior students have left for thier external exams........



these are a re-cyclers dream.

the walnut came from a shopfitters dumpster. the rosewood neck lams came from a coffee table.
the ebony bridges will come from the black keys of a dead piano.
the maple veneers were found in the back of a cupboard that hadn't been opened in 20 years.
the spalted maple rosette was donated by another memer on here.
infact the only BOUGHT bits are the rosewood bindings & fretboards, the $10 truss rods and a single AA spruce top from stewmac which covers both of them.

I got the final 2 coats of lacquer on my current build.  The weather was too beautiful to spend a long weekend in the shop.  I spent it with family and had a great time.

Here it is prior to finishing.   EIR b&S, Adi top, Granadillo fb, bloodwood bindings.   The bridge is just taped in place which is why it looks crooked. 

Not a thing guitar related.

Building a two story extension on the front of the house - which includes my new workshop. My weekends are filled with glazing, installing electrical cables, and gyprocking (that'd be dry walling to you yanks). The living areas come first, my workshop will be last on the list to get fitted out. Man, those 20' long sheets of soundproof plaster board are heavy even with a panel lifter, two layers of the stuff on all walls common to the living areas and the workshop, one of those walls is 22' high. Man, I need a holiday.

I've been getting a couple hours on some week nights to do guitar stuff if I'm lucky. Last night I had time, but was just too tired to be fooling about with power tools. Did I mention that I need a holiday?...

Been working on the hybrid electric archtop thing in the middle of moving house. I'd done this almost 2 months back, then was too busy to continue:



So I spent sunday turning this (well, from billet form, really):

Went to a pal's 53rd birthday bash, with two local bands playing...

Didn't stay long, as it was one of those parties where you had her pals from the church, then some pals from the upper class social set, and some go-getting work associates. It was kinda wierd, we were all standing in our relevant groups giving each other cautious glances...

The following day was better...a long cross country run ON MY OWN and a really nice few hours out walking in the middle of the countryside with my youngest daughter trying out her new tricycle. Husband found it hard to keep up with her, LOL...funny to see him trotting off round the corner with one arm exteneded to catch her....

Pottered around in the workshop too....

Finished a 72" ash backed birch longbow, made a flax bowstring and spent the rest of the weekend shooting it with my new set of sitka arrows.

Seeing the pictures of those fine instruments has left me racked with guilt. From Friday through Monday I did a fret job on a Fender Coronado XII and did the final shaping of a tricone neck. I spent most of the rest of the time out on my motor cycle - it's the first week of the TT races so there are thousands of bikers here and more arriving every day.

Other than unpacking some fine Zoot I got from the Swap Meet, not much guitar related either.
Well, I did get the second string (low “E”) on my first guitar. I had finally got my hands on a
razor saw, and it worked great for cutting the slots in the nut! Looks like I’m gonna have to lower
the bridge a bit though, to get the low to medium action.

What I mostly did, was set up the pool for the kids. They had a blast! My wife and I planted 72
tomato plants, squash, cucumbers, green beans, basil, and something else.
Did a lot of work around the property.

My wife shopped online for a travel trailer, and UNFORTUNATELY she found one she liked.

Oh Boy! Another project for me!

Good Googly Moogly, I just realized you live on the Isle of Man! So, would you put a brother guitar builder up one year if I can make it over there?? Seeing those races have been an almost lifelong dream.

Give that some thought!! I can pay!!

My pal at work is hoping to go over there this year with his Suzuki Hayabusa and he new American girlfriend with her Harley Davidson...

I rode a Yamaha wayyyy back when I was a student...I miss being a "biker"

I, and my wife, got to take care of 3 of the grandchildren for a week, including the 3 day weekend.
We're exhausted! If we could find a way to harness all the energy in those kids, there would be NO oil/gasoline crisis!
Needless to say, there was no time spent in the shop.

But we did pause to thank God for the country we live in and all those who have sacrificed to make/keep it so. One of them would have been my uncle, but he went down in a B-24 in WWII, 2 years before I was born.
Next time you see someone in uniform, go up and thank them for what they do.

It's getting pretty busy. Practice week is normally fairly quiet because most people arrive at the weekend but this was the square down the road from my house this afternoon.

I do too, but then I remember the pain of a broken pelvis, and that was only the first accident - got wiped out by a crazy arab taxi driver. The next accident was worse and I was in hospital much longer, but it was a different taxi driver that time (might have been the first guys brother). My wife banned bikes from my life after that, and when I look at my 3 year old daughter I tend to agree, it'd be nice to stick around for a while.

Bikes are great fun, but it hurts when you come off at speed, in peak hour conditions, on the freeway. Much safer on the race track.

I'm going to avoid references to sheep, you being a Kiwi and all.

I don't know what cattle yarding is, and anyway I'm scared of large beasts with small brains - I could make reference to my mother-inlaw, but I'll abstain.

I wish I could take you up on that Kiwi my friend, I'd love to get away from this bloody city for a while. Your place sounds pretty nice, even with the low bandwidth.
