I'm toying with the idea of changing a extra power planer I have into a drum sander. I was hoping to take the cutters out of the head and wrap the head with Velcro and place hook and loop sand paper on that. Has anyone tried this. I know that in the long run I'll be buying a power-max of some other proven machine. I thought this may buy me some time, but I don't want it to cost me some wood. What do you think. If it's possible someone on the forum must have tried it.

Thanks

Peter

I don't know for sure but the rpm of the planer may be too high.  With sandpaper it may burn.  Just speculation but....

Peter,
Tommy's right. The RPM of your planer will be way too high....about 10 times too high...to sand with.

Your belts would burn everything they touch and would pack up so quick that you'd never get a single piece sanded before needing to change them.

You best bet would be to sell that extra planer and pick up a nice thickness sander.

Thanks Guys,

It sounded too simple. I'll look into selling the planer.

Thanks

there is one manufacturer, rbi iirc, which sells interchangable heads for sanding, planing and gang sawing. i suppose they have to also have a method of adjusting the speed.
