Just got the color right on this fella. Fifth time was a charm for the ocean
burst. Lots of sanding and wiping with DA, but I now feel like the ocean
burst master. Vinyl pinstriping tape leaves a nasty residue on
wood, by the way. That was redo #1. I don't care to talk about redos 2,
3, and 4. Turned out nice though. I'm going to try USL on this puppy.
Wish me luck. Big thanks to everyone who offered advice on the color,
especially Mattia and Bob C.

So I also have a question for the water-base folks: The body is essentially
sealed with shellac, which is what I dyed (thanks, Bob). Do I need to scuff
sand the shellac at all before applying the USL, or will it stick to it well
enough that I don't need to?

Great color work there.  Don't think I have ever seen anything like that.  What a beauty.  And, Hesh, you are right....the quilt is hard to believe, it is so deep looking.

Thanks guys! I am pretty happy with the depth of the quilt. I was pretty
apprehrensive about doing the blue. It was what my client wanted
though, and I actually like it quite a bit now.

If you look closely you can see that Ghandi is watching over him too, so
I'm in good company!

Mike I wouldn't sand the blue before applying some clear coats. Remember that anything with a yellow cast will make your beautiful blue start to look green. USL should work fine. Be nice to test on a piece of scrap.

Bob, thanks. If it was necessary to sand the shellac, I was going to spray
an un-dyed clear coat of shellac over the whole bod first so as not to
sand the color. I'm a bit worried about messing the color up by doing
that though. I might just seal the bindings with a small brush and
shellac.

I'm not much of an electric guy, but that is down right gorgeous. I really like the ocean blue you coerced out of that maple!!! 5th times a charm eh? Whether it took 5 or 100 times, you nailed it.

Mike, I like the blue, but I REALLY like the back. Is that shading hand-
applied?

Christian, thank you much. I'm crossing my fingers that nothing else
goes wrong to prompt more times

James, thank you as well. The back is not hand-applied, at least the color
is not. I pore filled with z-poxy, sanding back to wood. Then I did
actually hand-apply a very thin coat of blond shellac. The color I sprayed
on though. TransTints and thinned shellac. Just under a 1 lb. cut.
