I thought I would see if anyone could name this wood. It would have stumped me(at least I have never seen this figure inthis wood).

Wood #1 with bearclaw figure(not sure if that would be the correct name for the figure, but that is what it looks like to me).


Now here is a second one that should be more familiar.


I do know the species. I am curious what you guys figure these two pieces are. I will confirm when someone guesses correctly.

Looks like Goncalo alve also known as Tigerwood in the USA. Doesn't come in a true bear claw figure, but I've seen that one fairly common. I have (or have had) Tigerwood on fiddleback, quilt, flame, pommele and a few other figures. Nice bass fingerboard material.

first picture is a quilt pattern
the second is curl pattern. The second looks like Koa to me but not sure about first color looks like Sapele

I'm a second for Goncalo. I made a guitar with a set that looked just like the second picture.

Well there is no fooling Larry . They are Goncalo Alves. I had never seen the figure that looks similar to bearclaw(at least in GA), but thought it was kinda cool.

I think I will make some back and side sets,fingerboards, and maybe even some binding with these. The colors are really rich(both pics above are bone dry). Very dense and hard wood.
