Does anyone know what day it is today?

Just a friendly reminder.

Maybe we could all take a moment and thank those who,
sort of, saved the world that day on June 6, 1944!

And, I'll bet some of those folks are still alive and well!

And my anniversery. 15 years. But no, no relation to the REAL D-day.
Yes, some of them are certainly alive. My wife's grandfather was a pilot on one of those amphibious boats that dropped the troops off to their demise. Never spoke a word of it until just recently he started developing Alzheimer's. Every once in awhile he unloads 60 years of pent up memories. It's a shame that we, as a society, didn't help the vets cope with what they had seen and done to the point where their best defense was to hide it away in the deepest darkest parts of their brain to never be spoken of again.

Thanks for the reminder, Robert. This was an event that required incredible bravery and self-sacrifice. We owe much of what we have today because of their heroism. Not only should we honor and respect their memory but also those who are in uniform today.

Put me in the mix too! I love war stories.

I have read all of W.E.B. Griffin's books on Army, Marines, Special Operations, etc.  Great sets of books, if you like that sort of thing.

I'm definately up for the read. My dad was a veteran of the Pacific Campaigns. He was a Navy aircraft machinist's mate attached to Marine Corps fighter squadrons -- beginning with the 214th on Guadalcanal. Brokaw is right about that generation. We owe our existence to them in many ways. And as Hesh has so eloquentlyput it, we owe more than we can give to vets of all conflicts.

      My Grandfather, would never talk about his experiences. He was in a rifle company, took a real beating. Everytime I asked, he would talk about a trap door spider he played with while he was under artillery fire.

    He would show us, a luger he captured from a Nazi officer, that was about it! Smile like a little kid and talk about the spider.

The day? yeah my ex-wifes birthday... 6/6/66 kinda tells the tale doesn't it?

Road trip book? Sound great what about a signature and brief thanx to all who were there (my grandfather too) and the final stop for the book would be back to Hesh's dad?

Great idea Ronn. I'm a very slow reader so it might be D-Day next year before this gets moving.
I've got lots of camping trips planned so I'll do lots of reading. I'll put together a list when I get the book.
