Does anyone know of a link or reference that basically lays out the Bendability (if that's even a word) of the various types of wood as well as the techniques to bend? Basically I'm looking for something that would say such and such type of wood is fairly easy to bend. It should be heated to X amount of degrees during the bend and should be spritzed with water before the bend for best results. If there is such a thing, I would greatly appreciate some direction in finding it. |

there isn't anything that I am aware of as this isn't as simple as you are thinking. There are alot of variables. the most influencial is thickness of the wood. Most woods that are well quartered will bend easier than that which is rift or figured. As a rule most woods are themoplastic. here is the kicker. use a working temp of 275 to 375 and you should do well. Most bend too cold. Also if you heat too long before bending you case harden the wood and this can cause cracking. I bend alot of wood and I have learned alot about bending in the 8 years I have been bending. too much water can cause alot of trouble. Often less is better, water does 2 things, mostly it make the air more dense so the heat can penetrate better, also it helps to avoid scorching. john hall blues creek guitars please check out my website and look at the tutorial section on bending |

I think John Mayes wrote an article for LINT that has suggested temperatures for different varieties of woods. If you can't find it on the LINT page, just PM John and ask him where to get a copy. |
